As I recall reading about it, the North Vietnamese called their army the PAVN. The Americans, not wanting to show that it was a 'People's Army' ie. an army supported by the people, made the decision to officially refer to it simply as the NVA. I guess the terms are interchangeable, depending on the point of view from which you're reading.Wasn't the North Vietnamese Army known as PAVN to differentiate them from t'other NVA?
