DFID finally on its way

Apart from humanitarian considerations, have you overlooked nature abhoring a vacuum? We make ourselves look mean, lose our ability to influence, and let Russia, China, and others take over. Not a great plan.
Humanitarian? Don’t make me laugh! It’s being binned because the local kleptocracy don’t GAF about their own!

Maintaining a global soft power footprint via 'aid' is merely a very expensive way of keeping African despots' WAGs in Chanel, Prada and Gulfstream trips to Paris. It's a piss-take of biblical proportions and needs binning in its entirety. Our 'influence' hasn't exactly stopped the Chinese has it?

Merging DFiD with the FCO is not going to help this country in the long run. It is a short term appeasement to the more right wing elements of the Tory party. linking foreign aid to our overseas interests will reduce our soft power and clout in the world and could possibly make the refugee/immigration system worse as less aid to countries could force more people to want to leave their countries.

Merging DFID with the FCO puts a crimp in the luxury car-purchasing programme of assorted lumps of kleptocratic scum in hot places and derails the gravy train for holier than thou parasites in this country who will now have to rely on private organisations to subsidise their hobby of patronising dusky foreigners of limited means.

Why doesn't the argument wash anymore? It is probably even more relevant with the humanitarian crisis's happening around the world at the moment, some of which we have helped cause.
Crises.

And your opinion on this is even less literate than your spelling.

In my opinion, of course...

Well it also happened as well when DFID was called ‘ODA’ and was part of, er, the FCO.

Is there any evidence for that?

We should be careful with spending, but that is not the same as what some seem to want.
Certainly, it's a point that's been made in terms of the ubiquity of some charities. What runs from/for the charities must also pertain in terms of 'official' aid.

If lots and lots is 'Made in Britain', 'British' or 'Gift of...' then we quite reasonably must seem like some Shangri-La.

Sure, but the slush fund wasn't ring-fenced and guaranteed by Act of Parliament and the FCO isn't entirely staffed by people who seem to hate this country and all it stands for.

Really? How did you know this?
Think of the FCO as a proper traditional public school and DfID as an upmarket over-performing comp or small town independent. On the face of it they appear very similar, only analysis of their DNA reveals stark differences.

obviously negates any argument having a spelling mistake. might as well take arrse offline in that case....
I'm glad you see my point. Sadly the main one sailed right over your noggin.

Not at all, just ignored it.
However, if a position opens for a pedantic -insert suitable noun- on arsse, are you available?
There's a roster, didn't you know?

Not much of a change, then.
No cuts to Aid

Also seem to recall when the ODA came under the FCO previously, the criticism of Mercedes getting the bulk of it was around then as well. One of the reasons the DFID was set up and removed from the FCO was to try and stop the number of slush funds in tax havens. That worked well.

About bloody time! But, oh dear, what’s this? A ‘senior’ Tory resigning in protest at the cruel cuts? Baroness Suggs (who?) resigns over Sunak cuts to Foreign Aid.
All you need to know is she is a former aid to David Cameron, who was awarded a CBE in Cameron’s controversial resignation Honours List and she was elevated to the House of Lords in 2016 - she’s 43 and never worked outside Politics.
Off you go and mind your arse on the way out of the door!

I feel rather sorry for all those foreign despots who're going to have to make do with their current luxury car fleet and clubbing their enemies to death for the forseeable.

You have to feel for all those exclusive Paris Luxury Department Stores too. COVID, swiftly followed by this. There’ll be Tears!

Sadly, Baroness Suggs will be going nowhere, not even on the Night Boat to Cairo. She has a season ticket for the ever-running gravy train, which is definitely not A Train That Never Comes, and she'd never dream of taking One Step Beyond the Lords back into the real world. She's An Embarrassment.

Sarah Champion MP, chair of the international aid select committee, said the cut in aid was devastating. She said: “Within six months a specialist development government department has been scrapped, this year’s budget has already been slashed and next year’s too by even more. I think we can wave goodbye to the development superpower status that we have proudly had for so long.”

Oh Dear, how sad!
