DFID finally on its way

Interesting, first Philip Rutnam, now Simon MacDonald; I wonder how many other Perm Secs will be watching their backs?

Theres a line from Chaucer - Knights tale

"The smyler with the knyf under the cloke..."

Start singing from the same song sheets gents.

A twist in the tail (tale?).

'The Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s top mandarin has announced he will retire early “at the request” of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as the ministry prepares to merge with the Department for International Development (DfID). Sir Simon McDonald, who has served as the Foreign Office’s permanent secretary for five years, will step down in September.'

Merging DFiD with the FCO is not going to help this country in the long run. It is a short term appeasement to the more right wing elements of the Tory party. linking foreign aid to our overseas interests will reduce our soft power and clout in the world and could possibly make the refugee/immigration system worse as less aid to countries could force more people to want to leave their countries.

Yeah that argument does not wash anymore.
Use the money for UK schools

Why doesn't the argument wash anymore? It is probably even more relevant with the humanitarian crisis's happening around the world at the moment, some of which we have helped cause.

India needs the aid so they can ping another satellite up in to space.

Apart from humanitarian considerations, have you overlooked nature abhoring a vacuum? We make ourselves look mean, lose our ability to influence, and let Russia, China, and others take over. Not a great plan.

One of the things that gives migrants the idea we’re loaded? Aid.

Is there any evidence for that?

We should be careful with spending, but that is not the same as what some seem to want.
