Deutschland 83...

Nostalgia can lose its charm. Was sent a link recently to some scans of 80s and maybe early 90s gentleman's entertainment imagery from journals of record such as Escort, you need not have a censor's pen to obscure genitalia as many growlers seemed to have their own camo net and defensive hesco. Not nostalgic to those times, even if it was a time of early exploration and even sight of some stockings and suspenders on a young (legal) friend. Looking back with married, 'unemployed' eyes...

No major dramas as I recall, but Gorby arrived in Feb 85 and there was a whiff of a wind of change with glasnost and perestroika. I'm certainly interested in seeing the German take on events.

If the producers are clever they'll run the programme through into 1990. Quite a challenge, I'd have thought.
The plan is for 3 series, 83-86-89.

Yet no mention has yet been made of either 1980 or 1984!

The largest ever exercise mounted by the British Army in West Germany since World War II, EX LIONHEART/SPEARPOINT 84 was a Corps level FTX which saw the deployment of the Corps Headquarters, two Armoured Divisions, a US Airborne Brigade flown out from Fort Bragg, USA, a majority of the Territorial Army committed to NATO and recalled Reservists from the UK and BAOR. The enemy was provided by Brigade sized armoured and armoured mechanised formations from I (GE) Corps, I (NL) Corps and II (US) Corps, with elements of UK Land Forces not committed to NATO.

Surely CRUSADER/SPEARPOINT 80 and LIONHEART/SPEARPOINT 84 must have been noticed by the Easty Beasties!

Lionheart whilst massive (yes I was on it and Valkerie Ride beforehand) were major FTX and not really the nuke system tests that Able Archer was although if I'd been in GSFG I'd have banned leave.

I originally found out about Deutschland 83 from lurking around these hallowed pages. As I live in the Canaries my choices for watching it were extremely limited. I managed to see it using this site www.thedaretelly.com/deutschland-83 . it's complete free to use and it's a great way to keep up with progs we can't get except by faffing about with VPNs.
As Deutschland 86 isn't going to on screen before 2018/19 ( it's being produced jointly be Amazon Germany and Deutschland producers UFA Fiction ), I thought some of you blokes might like a heads up on a new spy series. It's called Berlin Station, starring Richard Armitage amongst others www.moviepilot.com/p/how-berlin-station-brings-the-city-to-life/4106250.
It premieres on EPIX in the US this Sunday 16/10/2016. Hopefully it'll soon be available on the daretelly site.

PS you lot should also be watching "the Americans", it's about Soviet sleeper agents in the 80's.

So much cold war nostalgia nowadays...ironic since we seem to be heading back into it.

The whole series available on catch-up TV ch4

I saw an episode of this on a plane flying back from California yesterday, but no sound, as the stupid new iPhone headset doesn't fit, and I wasn't going to pay for the privilege of a shitty airline headset. Still, with subtitles and lip-reading the German, it whet my appetite.

My overall impression was that of historical accuracy. What a great show. It's on Hulu, so I started watching it from the start tonight. I'm not one for TV in general: if it weren't for the rest of the family, I'd happily do without a TV, but I did enjoy this, so far at least. I gather there's a Deutschland 86 in the works too.

As a 15 year old kid in 83 and a NIG in 86, this is right up my Straße.

Berlin Station Episode 1
How funny. I saw 'Richard Armitage', and thought of the ex Marine who did sneaky beaky stuff in 'nam, and went on to be Asst Secretary of Defence (or similar) under Dubya - thus assumed it was going to be a documentary !
