Designated or Codeworded

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. When briefing a piece of equipment, for example Predator, what is the correct way of titling it, for example:

    "The RQ-1, designated Predator.."

    "The RQ-1, codenamed Predator.."

Or is there another way? Apologies for the basic question, however, it's been bugging me :)

  2. "known as..."
  3. Thanks Legs, quick answer much appreciated.
  4. "affectionatley named"
  5. nicknamed at school
  6. I'd call it the "RQ-1 Predator" myself, both the designation and the name are equally valid.

    Edited to add:

I'd use "known as" for unofficial nicknames, eg:

The A-10 Thunderbolt II, known as Warthog.
