Des Browne Out, John Hutton In

#1
So, the new Sec Of State for Defence is set to be John Hutton. My question is is does it really matter? All they do is sign Warrants for new WO's... isnt it?

Even though Hutton's webmaster can't spell/proof-read, at least we have a DefSec with some idea of military history:

from his web site

"Publications "Kithener's Men" - Published by Pen and Sword Publishers April 2008. The book provides a history of the training and fighting experiences of the Service and Territorial battalions of the King's Own Royal Lancasters in France during World War One. Soliders in the Kings Own Roayl Lancaster were recruited from the Furness area and the book was inspired by the stories related to John by his constituents who served in the Great War. Any proceeds from this publication will go to the British Legion"

From the Beeb website:

Mr Browne is to leave the government, the BBC has learned. He was offered another job but he felt it would be an insult to the armed forces to leave as defence secretary but take another job.
At last the man shows some guts, albeit too late... :(

Time will tell over Huttons effectiveness as Defence Seceratary.

What I find more disconcerting is the appointment of Peter Mandelson back in to the Cabinet.

He left under a cloud after rumours of shady dealings and now he's back, has he changed for the better? I doubt it!!!!!

A leopard doesn't change its spots.

I really think that unlike that cnut Hoon, Browne was trying to do the best he could in an impossible situation that required both balls and specialist knowedge he lacked.

They dont even sign the warrants nowadays they just get their sig scanned on day one and its then just printed on. Disgusting way to treat Warrant Officers IMO. Take some time, sign the bloody thing properly and get it put some decent parchment and framed before a proper presentation. Only decent way to do it.

I'm beginning to wonder whether Brown is actually a Tory sleeper agent, planted in the Labour party by Thatcher just prior to the 79 election...

Politcal commentators are going around saying 'interesting move', but the public were er... puzzled by his reappointment after his first resignation, and this will be a bit perplexing. Also, since Mandelson will start work next week, he'll be just in time to make his first faux pas in time for the new series of Have I Got News For You, which is due to start on 17th October, AIUI. Given how highly the HIGNFY team regard Lord Mandy of Hartlepool, this could make for much fun and mirth.

Also, since it appears at least two service chiefs asked for Des to stay in post, are we to assume [rhetorical question] that Gordon's warm words about his regard for the forces weren't really sincere and that he holds the advice of his military leaders in contempt and doesn't care that a new appointment will represent uneccessary upheaval? [/rhetorical question].

They should dig up Robin 'Lightbulb head' Cook while they're at it. He is better qualified than half the cabinet as it stands on account of the fact that his brain activity is marginally higher than theirs.
