I've just had an e-mail saying that the Dept of Culture Media and Sport do not want the Red Arrows to perform at the 2012 Olympics because they are too British and too military.

There is a e-petition at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/RedArrows2012/?ref=redArrows2012

To be fair the Govt have issued a statement on that website to deny any such ban.

Does anyone know where this rumour is coming from?

This has been doing the rounds for quite a while and there was a thread on this sometime ago. Seems as if somebody is trying to perpetuate the rumour and failing miserably! God knows who though..

You wish :D

There have been at least 5 threads on this in the last 12 months and, as the response on the petition that links to above says, is in fact bollocks.

Why haven't the Red Arrows been privatised? They're an obvious choice - huge capital base, vast operating cost, measly apparent return.

They could be a band during their non-flying time, too.

Don't even say things like that in jest... We have a Government that hates the Military community so much that you might give them ideas.

Can we get a petition going to actually ban the Sparrows from 2012?

I live in London and there's already far too much smug in the air surrounding these Olympics. The last thing we need is a 'Diamond Nine' spraying more of it over the capital.

Too British ffs what would they prefer? A bunch of British Arabs on camels?

The Red Arrows spokesman Rachel Huxford said:

"We have had no discussions about the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics whatsoever.

We are still planning our 2008 season at this stage and that is a long way off. We understand that no decision has yet been made about the ceremony.

We performed when London won its Olympic bid in 2005 after we received a standard request from the Olympic organisers."

If they would fly even lower and slower in much larger aircraft then the MOD could put advertisments on the side of the red arrows.

I started the rumour, err..I mean heard, that the Red Arrows are banned from flying over mosques.. (hehehe, wait for The Sun to get hold of that one)
