Dentistry amid the Covid19 outbreak, a warning

Bit of a bump given how a lot of us are starting to see the state dentistry is in up and down the nation.

Was at the dentists again this morning to get a filling replaced. Place was quiet and quite relaxed so dentist and assistant chatting away to me about the state of NHS dentistry nowadays thanks to covid, re-iterating a point F_F made elsewhere recently that the funding is simply insufficient for sustaining NHS dentistry, exacerbated by the covid legislation now governing NHS treatment.

Looks like monthly pay plans are going to be the way forward for those looking to offset the inevitable cost of 'going private' to ensure good dental health.

I'm being sent to a BUPA specialist clinic to get 2 teeth taken out, as my dentist won't touch them. I've been waiting about 10 months on an appointment now.

I already had 18 teeth out just before Covid rared it's ugly head. Can't get fitted properly for dentures. Gums have shrunk, position of my teeth have moved etc.

It's mental here in the UK at the minute.

Might just get a loan and fcuk off to Turkey etc and get implants connected to false teeth bridges.

My wife had to have a tooth out which left her with a large gap, quite awkward for eating properly. Our (fantastic) dentist explained 3 options but for us the best was the most expensive, an implant. However she didn't have enough bone, so it required building up. Around 10 visits to a specialist (in Winchester) and a bill North of £5,000.

I was quoted 35k for a full set of implants when I was getting my teeth out two years ago.

Something like 400 quid an implant out there. Have a google, they have english sites for the clinics out there.

Down in Bath area in for final stage of a implant on Mon cost circa £2800. Cheaper abroad but complications can involve staying on for a few days,also make sure implants are on same pattern / thread type etc as UK models or follow on maintenance can be complicated.

I’m told that UK private rates for implants are likely to be in the range £1500 - £5000 depending on complexity and how flash the clinic is. Does anyone know if that sounds about right as the price I should be looking to beat?

Was around £1k and been perfect over 4 years. The weirdest bit was him putting something like a spanner in my mouth to tighten the tooth bit into the implant in the gum.

My regular practise has one chap who specialises, fairly standard .Have had a previous after RTA many years ago. Much more complicated in those days

With regards to the price, it's very much it depends.
Things that affect price:
Bone level (has to be sufficient depth of bone to successfully take an implant)
Bone density (will an implant osseo-intergrate)
Number of implants to be placed
What is going to be placed on top of implants
What implant system is used
Skill and experience of the team
Location in the country.
Types of pre-op scans and tests required.
Usual industry standard is to quote an average of around £2,000 a unit.

Ie a single tooth 2k
A 3 tooth bridge (2implants and 3porcelain prosthesis that replace 3 natural teeth) 6k.

Those are very rough averages

I'm in the process of having a crown fitted as an NHS subsidised patient at a Dentist in Walesland.

Temporary crown in place, finished crown being fitted next Friday. Cost £203.00 for a standard crown.

The last crown I had fitted was a porcelain crown to replace a gold crown I had fitted in 1983. The gold crown kept coming loose or falling out so time to replace it.

Two questions purely out of curiosity.

Is the old gold crown worth anything?
To those who are having implants fitted, is it done under general anaesthetic?

There are a couple of websites that'll buy your gold crown. I only looked it up after having mine removed and declining taking it home. No anaesthetic necessary for implant. Just usual dental jag in the gum.

So screwing a piece of metal straight into the gum for the implant to be screwed into is done just using a bit of local into the gum.
