Defence committee: Fears for future care of troops.

Makes for interesting reading but will the MP's listen to the committee's concerns or will it be stag on as normal?..

Fears for the care of troops returning from service with severe injuries and mental health problems have been raised by an influential group of MPs.

The Commons Defence Committee praised "the first-class medical treatment" available but questioned whether it was sustainable in the years ahead.

MPs also called on ministers to exclude armed forces injury compensation from the means testing of benefits.

Their report follows the introduction in May of the Armed Forces Covenant.

The government will produce its usual formulaic response to committee reports containing just the right blend of positivism and ambiguity. Once social and political amnesia takes hold following the drawdown from Afghanistan, the tried and trusted system of 'social dumping' of the mentally disordered into prisons and rough sleeping will re-assert itself just as it has always done since the Napolionic wars. It would be naive in the extreme to expect anything else from the Political classes.
