Dead Pool 2020

Certainly for North American sports this is a really big deal. Kobe Bryant was such a massive figure in basketball and a hugely talented and relentless performer. I’m not sure how to rate it in UK terms but a huge figure in the sport and beyond. RIP to him and condolences to his family.

Of course I feel for the family of the deceased basketball player and his daughter. It must be a terrible thing to cope with.

As for the families of the other passengers, how do they feel?
This tragic accident is broadcast everywhere you look and they barely get a mention, their names will be unknown, they are portrayed as faceless extras in the whole thing.

Your son, daughter, husband, wife etc has been killed in a tragic accident and the universe is saddened by the loss of the important people involved.

BBC news just cut short a report and interview with a specialist on Respiratory Disease who is heading out to China to try and help the Coronavirus outbreak. They did however interview a random who had never met Bryant and was in sports journalism after Bryant retired.

I wonder how the lady he raped feels about it.

Funny how the #MeToo crowd (other woke hashtags are available) give a free pass to sports stars and gangsta rappers.

I don’t recall the Grammys melting down when Epstein died.

This would be akin to David Beckham, Andy Murray, Joe Root etc. popping their clogs in a dramatic manner. Front page news stuff for sure in the USA.
Definitely bigger than Murray and Root because of the size and scope of the sport (in the US). Definitely bigger than Beckham because he was a genuine legend of the sport, as opposed to a reasonably talented player married to a wife with an aptitude for marketing. Messi or Ronaldo significance I would have said, or, if you prefer your analogies more local, Bobby Charlton?
