Addington where joining the army and going to Afghanistan as a rifleman gets you shot at less.

Wish I could give you a like for that Loki :)
For a contract, I lived in Thornton Heath a suburb of Croydon for a while, now that was some shit hole

The only good thing was a Jewish bakery open 24hrs with rather nice cakes

And I remember working at lunatic house in Croyden, when they went ape shit at a works do when I said I going to get a bus home

They made it sound a warzone, it was get a taxi, you don't get on a bus here at night

I never saw trouble apart from the usual yoofs playing up, but often driving into Croydon I'd see police crime scene tents outside nightclubs on the drive into Croydon, and outside Lunatic House, there was a homeless doss house nearby so you'd often get accosted by crackheads begging for money

The shopping centre was supposed to be rough at night and the town centre in general but as I rarely ventured out I missed the fun

Lived there for three years, wot a f*cking kharsi! Even the police patrolled in fours. You could tell they were police, they were wearing Burberry helmets!

Had a fab BJ from a large breasted lady in a car park in Croydon once.

Which was nice.

For those of you who don't already know. the Honourable East India Company operated their own private army under Royal charter and had their own military academy in Addiscombe, which would have been rural Surrey in those days (I think that the locally recruited men were trained at the old Warley Barracks in Brentwood).

The whole thing was disbanded along with everything else HEIC shortly after the Indian Mutiny. The area was soon thereafter developed as housing, but I think the old gymnasium building and a couple of teaching staff houses still exists amongst the other housing.

I had the awful misfortune of living in Southall during a spell working in the midden of England many years ago.. looked like somewhere in the middle east then ( well apart from the one pub I went in that had an irish tricolour behind the bar and a guy with a collecting tin " for the bhoyos over the water .." ) gimme the frozen North everytime

My old man moved to Addiscombe to be closer to work (contracting at the HO). Not a bad area. The centre of Croydon was a bit crap and dull 20 years ago, it has only got worse.
I was last in the area in 2017, West Croydon is a right mess, the rest is okish. Poor and stabby mixed with self imposed middle class ghettos.
The old Croydon accent is a bit Surrey/Kent mix. Fuck knows what it sounds like now.

I lodged in Croydon for a few months back in '87, within 10 minutes walking distance of the station, it said (if you run like f*ck, I found out), when I was contracted to work in the Great Metrollops. No doubt it is much worse now, but even then it was obvious the Luftwaffe lacked their usual Teutonic efficiency in making improvements to such areas. The horror of it haunts me still.

The big money is try to make Croydon a transport hub for commuters. Huge great big blocks of flats (the size of bed sits) next to the station for millennials to buy. They will work and socialise in central London, then commute back to Croydon to sleep and eat in a flat so small it would give Harry Potter claustrophobia.
The locals will be pushed out further or shipped "East".

Trying the same gig in Lewisham near the Stations......

Croydon is shit, and that's coming from a propah sarf lunden boy

Everything North of Station Road/Tamworth Road is fucking shit. Think Aleppo, but every other shop offers an unlocking service for your stolen mobile.

That was the front line during the rioting in 2011. There was no looting or damage South of that 'DMZ'

South of that line it is not too bad. It ain't Shang-ri-lah, but it's definitely not a shithole.

And we have trams, so that angry residents of New Addington can travel out of their ghetto and have racist rants at anyone Polish or wearing a hajib.
