A British serviceman has been killed in action in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said.

The soldier from the 1st Battalion The Rifles died from his wounds on Saturday after being hit by enemy fire.

He was killed while on a foot patrol during a joint operation involving UK forces and members of the Afghan National Army.

The operation was targeting enemy forces close to the District Centre of Sangin in Helmand province.

Commander Paula Rowe, spokeswoman for Task Force Helmand, said: "All members of the task force are deeply saddened by the death of this brave soldier and we offer our sympathy, thoughts and prayers to his family, friends and comrades as they try to come to terms with their tragic loss."

His next of kin have been informed.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all who grieve.
