Surely they would still be working anyways, so defeats the point entirely.
I would think the majority are but there must be a few that due to whatever circumstances are not doing anything useful in the day job and offered their services. Would be interesting to know exactly which skills there is a shortage of rather than just general categories.

Almost certainly, there's a fair few white collar accountant/lawyer types in the reserves who are probably at home twiddling their thumbs. Not sure why they would be needed but the article mentions them.
Most of them (myself included) are working from home without time for thumb-twiddling.

I admire your touching faith in army efficiency.

just saw some Engineers delivering M3 medical gear on the TV, if they backed the truck up an extra 10 feet they could have just kicked the boxes directly onto the loading bay without the photo opportunity.

You miss the point that they'd probably already unloaded them, but had to put them back again for the photo op.

Not sure why they would be needed but the article mentions them. Goes without saying that those with specialist medical/logistic roles in their day jobs might be needed.
"Reserves who are already working in the NHS or delivering front-line services will not be called up."

Frigging sick telling people that. Also media keep going on about "field hospitals" being set up. No They Are Not!

I don't mind being sworn in as a PCSO and enforcing the coronavirus act, I haven't read it but I presume it allows me to wait outside Tesco and search through peoples shopping for confiscation of non essential items like beer, wine spirits , crisps and those mini sausage rolls I like , deploy stingers in the high street and demand kids down the park respect my authority.

Yes I read that but clearly they have identified 3000 reservists who they need with medical, engineering and logistic backgrounds.
I still admire your touching faith in army efficiency.

The belter you quoted a few posts up
I know what an absolute belter, 3000 reservists mobilised. Part of the "tried and tested intelligent mobilisation process". I don't think they are looking for queue jumpers outside Tesco to truncheoned just yet. I was just just interested to know which specific skills the government were looking for given that a lot of these roles will already be key workers

According to this some have been mobilised?

Yes.

Mostly as IAs where they have a skill set that is needed, HGV drivers, some mechanics (rolling services to keep fleet on the road), signals to coord hqs, and I believe they are now creating some formed troops/platoons etc.

As before, if you are a reservist and are needed, your Chain of Command will be in touch. Most of us have had to do availability returns etc.

Silly question time.

Why are reserves being mobilised? There will be several regular RLC units not resupplying ammo to arty and armd units that are not on firing camps. Their LADs and Wksps aren’t fixing as many wagons because they won’t be breaking. 5x campaign Signal Regiments that could surely spare a few squadrons between them? How many infantry companies, arty btys and RAC sqns have blokes available for general manpower.

Given the nause involved in officially calling out a reservist, let alone three thousand of them, this just surprises me a bit.

Or am I wrong, and the MOD has already committed tens of thousands of troops and these are being called up as reinforcements to the tens of thousands already on task? I know there was 10-20000 on standby, but if they’re not actually on task, just on standby, why the reservists?

Or is this the MOD getting ahead of the game and calling them out ahead of when they’re actually needed?

Not having a dig, just mildly curious.
