Blair accused over donations 'loophole'

Labour has been accused of altering by stealth the rules over political donations, which would let it solicit gifts behind closed doors.

Under proposals in the Company Law Reform Bill, a copy of which has been seen by The Sunday Telegraph, trade unions would no longer be regarded as "political" organisations. This would enable companies to donate more freely to unions, which supply much of the money that finances the Labour Party.

The legislation would create a loophole in the tight regime effected by the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act of 2000. It would let companies fund unions without shareholder approval.

David Willetts, the shadow trade and industry secretary, said: "This looks like a cosy deal that Labour are trying to smuggle through to help them raise money without the normal controls.

"It drives a coach and horses through the rules on donations. You can now give money to a trade union without needing shareholder approval and then the trade union can pass on money to the Labour Party."
There's also another piece in the Mail about whether the Wicked Witch payed VAT on some pearls she picked up in China (at a 50% discount).

The Hinduja brothers - they own, inter alia, Tata Trucks who are the largest automotive concern in India...... if I recall correct, the last Tory administration was accused of pallying up with them too.....

Family were recently acquitted of channelling $8.5M in bribes to senior figures in the Indian Govt on behalf of a little known Swedish arms manufacturer called Bofors.....

Good Q&A piece at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/2474787.stm

...no doubt they are delighted that their good friend of previous years Mr Mandelson ( who was SO helpful in regard to succesful applications for British citizenship) is now in a position as European Trade Commissioner to put fresh business their way....

The fact that Peter Mandelson has been involved with them is really all that needs to be said....

Worst thing is we have nobody to block this either. None of the opposition parties are going to want to stop this bill going through as they will be able to abuse it also. We have to rely on the House of Lords and its unlikely they will stop it, good ol' Tony has them over a barrel, he will just threaten to reform them again if they block anything he wants.
