Correlli Barnett

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. I've read a few of Corelli Barnett's books- "The Audit of War", "The Lost Victory" and (I think) "The Collapse of British Power", and found his arguments fairly persuasive. What do other ARRSErs think, and are his books such as "The Swordbearers" worth having a look at?
  2. Barnett clearly good, but he is a bit of a arch reactionary as regards the western front.
  3. I read The Audit of War and was so impressed I bought The Lost Victory and The Collapse etc. I didn't find them half such good reads - I could see that they were jolly good history, but not something to read a few pages from at bedtime. In fact, I don't think I ever finished The Lost Victory.

I thought The Desert Generals was pretty good - I think that was the book that first brought him to wider public attention .
