On this day (26th December in the New Style Calendar, 14th in the Old) in 1825, the Decembrist revolt began in Imperial Russia. One hundred years later, the centenary of the event was eulogised by the Bolshevik Regime as the first stirrings of the people against the Tsarist Regime.

The winners write the history books, as always.

Well, the Bolsheviks came and went and so did 'Decembrist Square' in St Petersburg, now once again called Senate Square. From rationed potatoes to no potatoes to queueing for potatoes to an abundance of potatoes. Total and outrigt victory.
