Contact? There's an app for that.

Full marks for this,

An iPhone app that tracks down the Taliban has been developed by a U.S. soldier -- who put $26,000 of his own money into the project.

The idea for a smartphone application to assist soldiers in combat came to Capt. Jonathan J. Springer in a dream last July, he said Monday. The 31-year-old, from Fort Wayne, Ind., has worked with programmers ever since to make the idea a reality.

Tactical Nav, which is expected to be available through Apple’s App Store next month, assists soldiers in mapping, plotting and photographing waypoints on a battleground and conveying coordinates to supporting units.

Doubtless, if it had been put out to tender, then a couple or three of 0's would have been added to the price.

It will be interesting to see if it is used/useful.

I think that there was talk of a USMC soldier coming up with an app to identify head injury and other trauma post explosion. The logic was that the iPhone can determin how much force the carrier has been subject to, and once all the life-saving triage had been completed the medic could assess each person to see how concussed/stunned-to-fcuk they were and see if there was anyone who needed to be caevaced who might pile in later from concussion injuries.

Another app required iPhones to be networked within a team/squad, and their iPhones would act as a range finder/direction finder when they came under SRSAF. Quite cool really.

Great idea, if only we had a reliable radio backbone. When does Son of Bowman appear? ;)
