Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Having just read that families in America receive about £270,000 compared to the £27,000 received by British families .... I was just wondering, is this given to just wives of killed servicemen, with young children to support, or it is also given to parents where the soldier concerned had no family to support?

  2. Eve,

It is not that simple, and it only being discussed by congress, see yesterdays Washington Post.

  3. Eve, currently the next of kin, parents if single or if married the wife, receives $12,420. Most soldiers/marines/sailors/airmen sign up for SGLI
servicemember's group life insurance which at present is $250,000. The beneficiary receives the payment on the death of the service member.

The administration is seeking to increase both the SGLI to $400,000 and the death gratuity.
