Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Yes, it appears to be true - words fail me. Wasn't this the collusion that the then Foreign Secretary, 'Banana Boy' Milliband said he knew nothing about? OK, so we bung them a load of wonga as 'hush money' - who's to say that they won't trouser it then go public anyway? After all, despite living here and trousering benefits, they have no love for this country and most of them aren't British citizens anyway.
  2. Welll. As ever its not quite so clear as all that. The pay out is instead of a trial about events before they got to Gitmo. It is alleged that MI6 was complicit in the torture of at least one of these people in Morocco. Ie a MI6 officer interviewed said suspect in Pakistan and then a list of questions was supplied while he was under the cosh in Morocco. Which is a bit dodgy under UK law. There is certainly a case to answer from evidence so far. The UK government could well have won the case despite sworn testomny from serving US officers, certainly before wikileaks it might have been winable. Now? Well a bit moot but an out of court settlement will probably save the tax payers money in the long run and certainly be better for MI6 who dont want to be dragged through the courts.

What is in no doubt is that he did train to commit terrorist acts against the west, he admits it...and that he did get tortured. So. Whats he going to do with the cash? Nothing good. I would suspect if hes got half a brain he will spend the rest of his life just being an annoying thorn in the side of the West. Various US military officials are on record that he was tortured and that both UK and US were complicit. Thats propoganda gold right there.

If you're going to break the rules, dont get caught. As per usual politicians decided one thing in the heat of the moment and then changed their minds a few years later leaving our nations and various folks in the military/intel well and truely fecked. This payout is just another result of that. Better to have handed him over to the French and executed him the field under one of their millitary courts (3 officers say hes guilty and thats it)
