I was discharged from RM training not too long ago, currently undergoing a medical appeal to join the army and if this is successful hope to join 29 commando in Plymouth. The RA seems like a good option to me as it seems like there are many specialist/elite regiments you can go on to and looks orientated towards a infantry type role. I was wondering what daily life within 29 was like mainly from people who’ve followed the same path, and could the option to potentially transfer to the RM be available down the line?

Also been considering the paras however I’ve always been a bit crap with heights and the trainasium looks like it would see me right off. Was wondering if this was something that I could build towards or is it just something you do once during P company and if you fail a few times that’s you done? Don’t want to seem like a potential Walt but just seeing what could be open to me.
Many thanks.

You do know that Commando regiment applicants have to pass the All Arms Commando Course?

Did you not get the answer you wanted in this thread? https://www.arrse.co.uk/community/threads/29-commando-life.286920/

Absolutely.

As is common with this site I only got 1 serious response, unfortunately seems like this is going the same way. Seems like people don’t understand if they don’t have anything productive to say then don’t waste time saying it.

Thanks.

The Commando Gunners are equipped with the L118 105mm light gun, and are currently part of 3 Commando Brigade. Most batteries are currently based at the Royal Citadel in Plymouth, with one battery based at RM Poole and 7 (Sphinx) Battery based at Royal Marines Base Condor in Arbroath.
Like I said earlier, if you are crap with heights, a parachute regiment is not the way to go. However to overcome that fear do things that involve heights, go to the top of the everest or something.

Can't answer for day to day unit life at 29.

If it hasn't changed, you pick RA as your capbadge during recruiting process. You then have to wait until phase 2 at Larkhill to register an interest in going to 29, where you will receive the relevant info on pre aacc etc. I also believe you will get extra PT sessions during phase 2 as well

Exactly what I mean about this website. Ask an innocent question and randomness replying with ‘F#ck off badge collector’. Sorry for trying to show ambition. Wasn’t discharged for medical reasons either. I was too inexperienced and basically didn’t have a clue what I was doing.
Not having a go, but how recently did you fail and why?

Was an admin vortex basically, which had a snowball effect meaning I got no sleep, went from being fit to not, couldn’t concentrate during important lessons etc so was an all round sack of s***. Ended up reaching the steady heights of week 11 after 6 months and getting discharged. Gonna be my biggest regret but I’ve learnt from it and determined to put this right. Can rejoin in just over a year but to be honest, I can’t afford to wait that long.
Cheers

Maybe lower you expectations slightly?
Do you qualifications?
Roughly how old are you and what are you interested in?
You have no choice when you can join again, unfortunately.

Have a load of GCSE’s and an A level to boot but I know what my goal is and I’m confident I can achieve it this time around! I’m free to join the army whenever I believe but it’s the marines specifically I’ve got to wait around for, which is why I’m looking at alternate paths. I’m 21 now btw. Thanks!

RAF Regiment? Easier life

Haha, nah it’s not an easier life I’m after. I had the right minerals mentally but just couldn’t meet the standards at the time, hence the idea of 29 commando to have another crack at it.
You maybe won't get 29, You will be joining the RA, not 29.

If you've got civvie quals, why go for RA? All the Army Commando units have attached ranks - I was REME and did 4 years with 29, serving time with every battery (although most of my time was at Poole). Get a good trade training at Lyneham and you can volunteer for the Green Machine at the end of your course.
