Cold War Book

I'm looking for the title of a book I read back in the 80's and any help would be greatly appreciated. It was sort of a serious version of Try Not To Laugh Sergeant Major and amongst other things looked at the ethos and command style of different units (Guards and RGJ I think). I thought it was something by Mark Urban but going through his early work nothing matches.
Any ideas?
Dennis Barker, Soldiering On, perhaps? Written about 1988 and sub-titled 'an unofficial portrait of the British Army'.

ETA - first edition was 1981 rather than 1988. Contents page (with acknowledgements)
