Covid has dealt me quite an interesting hand. For the past few years me and the missus have been racking up over 20,000 miles a year each. We lease two new cars at around 350 - 400 quid a month a piece and change them every 3 years. We’re both now predominantly working from home and this isn’t going to change post Covid. Apart from the school run (when it’s open) and the odd trip to the supermarket, we aren’t really driving at all. I still have to do a 140 mile round trip to work maybe once a fortnight but it’s certainly not every day like it used to be. So it’s got me thinking.... I hate modern cars. They’re just dull as shit. I always get something reasonably flash and German, but there is just no excitement in it. When I was younger, getting a new car was about the most exciting thing in the world, now it’s like choosing a new washing machine. There is no joy in it at all. I’ve got a 1 year old, top spec Golf GTD on the drive with all the toys, but I’d rather drive my 51 year old Landy. I still need to keep one of our leases (next one is likely to be electric) for the school run and carting the family away on holiday and what not, but I can definitely ditch the other one. The missus is thinking “great we can save some cash and get a cheap little run around as the second car.” But I have bigger plans. Frankly I don’t want to be the guy who drives a 10 year old Ford Fiesta. What about a fairly useable classic car as a daily runner? Something fun and cool that might even appreciate a little in value? As mentioned above, I’ve already got a series 2a Landy, but that’s way too agricultural for longer trips and the missus absolutely refuses to drive it. I’ve also got a 27 year old Ferrari which I love, but it’s not really practical as a daily runner. It’s thirsty and very expensive when it goes wrong. It’s for special occasions only. There’s also the wife’s grandfather’s 1958 MGA that I’m currently the custodian of but isn’t really my car to go racking up big mileage on. Plus a variety of wrecked 1960s and 70s Fiats that are awaiting restoration. So what’s out there that is reasonably practical as a daily runner? I’m thinking modern enough to be comfy and semi reliable but old enough to still be cool. Needs to have 4 seats for all the family I like the idea of a 1980s Beemer or Merc. E30 convertible or W124 coupe. Maybe even an old skool 528? Old jag? XJ6 or something? Mk1 or 2 Golf GTi or Scirocco? Porsche 944? Saab 900? Classic Mini? I love Italian stuff and would love another Lancia, Fiat or Alfa but I realise this is a stupid idea. They just aren’t reliable enough and will just turn to rust if used as a daily, although a Beta coupe would be very cool. Stupid ******* idea and just get a 15 year old Volvo estate? Pics of current toys..
