Classic car as a daily runner?

Haha that's my son's car!

Needs to go to someone who knows what they're doing to reverse some of the botches from the previous owner. I don't have the facilties (or will) to weld up the sills, so we're hoping that someone with time and love wants to take it on. Goes like a rocket with the over-boosted diesel turbo and on veg oil costs peanuts to run.
If it needs welding it might be good to mention that in the listing or you may have a unhappy buyer when they turn up and see that.

Oooh that is very nice.

Another one that will start to creep up. There’s a mk2 on eBay right now for 20 grand.

I really think these are gonna go the way of classic Fords. 10 years back no one would‘ve believed an Escort could be worth 100 grand.

Time to start investing in old Golfs.
I'm back to travelling now that hotels are back open.

Just done Chesterfield and then Middlesborough this week. Next week is Sheffield then Brize, week after is Warcop then Tidworth then Sellafield then Coningsby.

I'll be staying with the Volvo for the foreseeable as it's comfy, has good climate control and does 55mpg on the motorway, and has sufficient room for the hound in the boot when needs be.

What a glamorous and jet set life you lead.

You left out Birkenhead and Basra though.

'I like the idea Agatha but 'The C.M.S murders' isn't the punchiest title in the world. Couldn't they be alphabetical, that'd work'.

No, I've just picked up a job at Warcop.
It's like Basra but with rain.
I drive through it twice a day for the school run.

I went through a few months back and there was an Army unit doing dry mortar training on the footy pitch. All day, everyday.

For two weeks.

In the pissing rain.

It looked really really shit.

Back on thread.

Since this Golf is gonna be my daily runner I’ve decided to spend some cash getting it properly sorted. This won’t be like my usual classics that are “rolling projects” and always have something slightly wrong with them.

It appears to have been the subject of a decent restoration at some point. I can’t be 100% sure, but the paint looks way too perfect to be original. It has a couple of very small rust patches to sort plus some engine fettling to make it reliable.

I’ve found a local guy who knows these things inside out and he’s got it in pieces already giving it the works.

I'd guess in the last 2 yrs somebodies bought it, fettled it & sold it on ?

Aye the guy I bought it off said he’d had it about 3 years so that makes sense. Apart from an oil pump he didn’t do much to it.

I’ve got bills and receipts going back about 10 years but nothing for paint / restoration.

He only did about 1000 miles in it.

He's keeping his trip to Hull hush hush.

Doesn't want anyone to get jealous.

Possibly.

They’re steadily creeping up and certainly tipped for future classic status.

The mk1 hard tops were undoubtedly better cars to drive, but you’re now looking at 10k plus for anything useable. 30k plus for concourse and rarer ones like the early models with smaller rear lights.

As the hard tops grow out of reach, the cabs are catching up. This thing was an absolute bargain at 4 grand. There are non runners for considerably more and there’s a Recaro interior on eBay right now for more than I bought this whole car for.

I could spend a grand or two sorting a few niggles and probably double my money on it.

It’s off to a classic VW specialist tomorrow for a full service, new roof and clean bill of health.

Fingers crossed these go the way of classic Fords and skyrocket.
I'd love to get my hands on a Capri 280 Brooklands.
But it looks like I'm not going to.

its either a hobbyist DIY job or maybe a mechanic / bodyshop man who does bits on the side & makes a few quid.

he's made a grand or more, you've a tidy looking 30 odd yr old car, everyone's happy ?

Nah the guy I bought it from definitely wasn’t. Lovely bloke (ex Blues & Royals) but not a mechanic.

The guy before him maybe.

I’d just be interested to know if that’s the original paint. It’s absolutely pristine if it is.

Either way it’s been done to a very good standard if it has had a spray.

Can’t wait to get it back from the garage. Hoping it’s all done before the end of summer.
