Chief Goes to Washington

I have to say, I was reminded of someone:

Patrick Hughes? Former director of the DIA? What's he doing in uniform at the Pentagon these days? Didn't he get out years ago?

I actually didn't go to the Pentagon (others did). I went to Aberdine instead :headbang:

Anyway, Hughes was part of a Panel discussion at the "conference center" (a best western hotel). He said that once you become a general, you never "get out". He does consultant work for various agencies now.

Is that anywhere near Aberdeen? ;)

Ask to see his tax return from 1999 (when he retired) and his latest 1040. He won't be out, he'll be right in there, sucking at the Green teat with everyone else that goes through the revolving door.

Yeah...

Cool trip out there anyway, I got to get my hands on an XM8

Should still look good on the old college applications.

You're looking at Civil Affairs type MOS, right? Have a look at Communications as a major (or at least a minor). Absolutely p1ss-easy and damn good looking girls. On the upside, they're as dim as 2 Watt lightbulbs and they fcuk like trainwrecks (IIRC, of course). On the downside, they're all batshit crazy- although that's why they fcuk like trainwrecks.

Unless they let him in to see some very cool demos I'd have taken the Pentagon instead. On the other hand you get to see the Oriole's stadium if that's your thing and good seafood if you stop at the right place.

I've considered communications. I try to stay clear of batshit crazy women though, it's all fun and games until the tasers come out... but I digress... Anyway, here's a pic of one of the more unusual sights of the trip. It was a protest where a bunch of people charged the Capitol dressed as cows. Not sure exactly what it was about, something about cloning and icecream :plotting:

Me with the XM8 SAW (I appologize for the waltishness, but I couldn't help it  )

Secretary Gates and General Pace

Sean McCormack, spokesman for the State Department. Now I don't want to be too hard on him, he seemed like a nice enough guy, but I do have to tell you about the fun several people had at his expense. Whenever he was asked a question he was unprepared (or not allowed) to answer, he would nervously rearange his tie, clear his throat, and begin his response with "yes.. uhh.. um.. that's a very topical question". He went white when some kid asked him about Guantanamo

This guy scared the hell out of us. We heard tires skidding and a shot gun cocking and we turned to see him in the "tactical position". It was nothing apparently, but these guys are everywhere.

I'm sure I've seen that fat knacker on the History Channel, or some such thing. Does he always look like he's one prime rib dinner away from cardiac arrest?

Yeah, he's on the history channel quite a bit (actually, I saw him on there just yesterday). And yes, he does always look that way, but he assures us all that mass is deviously concealed muscle

Apparantly, his name is some sort of vulgarity I'm unfamiliar with

Well done, Kevin and congratulations. But, hey, that original notification you posted is just sooooooo damned, fcuking American!!!!!!!! I am flabberghasted.
Yeah I know, I was chuckling as I read it
In the open area in the middle of the Pentagon there's an eating area. It's quite nice, actually- very park-like. When the building was first completed they had a problem with sky rats. Accordingly the DOD, in their infinite wisdom, put a contract out to tender to eradicate the problem, worth a few thousand dollars (not an inconsiderable sum in the late 40s/early 50s).

Legend has it that an enterprising 13yr old kid sent in an owl that he carved out of wood to scare the pidgeons away. They put it up, it did the job and the DOD set a new record for the amount paid for a piece of sculpture by someone still in middle school. More importantly, it set a precedent for paying over the odds that continues to this day for every single piece of kit that goes throught the PPBS. :D
OMG...didn't get any further...don't let Hereward read this, he'll be emailing Alex Jones to say there's a minature Bohemian Grove in the pentagon!!!!

Yes ditto.

If looks are anything to go by, not someone I'd trust with a boy scout troop.

Apparently he's ex USMC (a whole division?)

Slide from a presentation by a Marine Major. He gave a very interesting talk about his experiences in 2003 and 2005. He gave a very blunt talk, something I appreciated. His presentation had a "non-attribution" policy, so I won't go into too much detail about what he had to say.

Code Pink protestors at a congressional hearing. We were trying to find the hearing, and knew we were headed the right way when I saw someone being "escorted" out of the building for disrupting a hearing. We figured we were headed in the right direction. I'm all for freedom of speech, I even have friends who are active in the anti-war movement, but these "ladies" were incredibly rude. Among our group was a JROTC cadet who was in uniform, they gave him the most hateful look I'd ever seen in my life.

NJ, our Samoan cadet right after saluting at least two generals and a colonel (a bunch of officers were on their way to the hearing, about 5, I didn't see all of their ranks). The expression on one of the generals faces when he saw that the 'soldier' saluting him was actually a JROTC cadet was priceless, his "war face" evaporated into a smile

National War College

Colin Powell's diploma from the National War College

Conference at the War College. Complete with CIA spook in the corner.

That would end up being my role in the "National Security Simulation". More on that later. The scenario was well thought out, but my group's approach often approached the absurd.
