Too bad there's no ARRSE team.
Be careful what you wish for...

Imagine a team made up of geriatric alcoholics all insisting on carrying "that rifle" and stopping every five minutes for a fag / wee / brew?

Tactically it may be unstoppable, but only at certain times of the day and for limited periods.

I no longer smoke but will make up for it with extra wee breaks

I am managing to progress further in my quest to actually play some of STALKER: AREA. I managed to knock off one of the nastier dungeons in the game, "Laboratory X-16" in the Lake Yantar bit of the map. Veterans of the series should know this particular hell-hole as the home of one of the brain-melting installations, the so-called "Miracle Machine", only in this version of the game, the makers have turned the knobs on its nastiness all the way up to eleven. The psychic protection helmet that the game's main geek, Professor Sakharov, sells for forty grand and is supposed to get you close enough to turn the machine off and get the hell out of there, does not work, so all the psychic phantom forms of the game's living mob-types do full damage when they hit you, so it takes forever to get down to the bit where you have to turn off the machines, and even when you do, said living mob-types that also infest the place in the normal game are there in full-effect.

Lab X-16 for the normal version of the dungeon.

I don't know how long it took me to crack the mission, only that it was way too long, and I'd love to meet the guy who took out the God Mode cheat from the game in a dark alley, as I only finished the mission because I was bloody-minded as hell - I got killed so many times that I have even more sympathy for Tom Cruise's character in "Edge of Tomorrow". One of the cheats I did manage finally to get to work let me spawn in a revolver grenade launcher. It was extremely cathartic to empty six grenades each into the Controller near the lab exit, and the Pseudogiant in the drainage tunnels underneath it.

I have to say, despite all of that, I'm sneakily beginning to creep towards actually recommending the mod, but only if you've played the other games in the series, and the other major single or compilation mods. And have lots of spare keyboards and mice, because you might end up launching them into the wall when one of the ghost mobs takes off that one last smidgeon of health when you're on the ladder down to Laboratory X-16.

Any perspectives on BF2042? I’m undecided so far on whether to give it a go or wait a while. Quite a few reviews have been impressively unimpressed by it.

What a load of wànk. That sums it up. It is horribly broken at the minute - even worse than BF4 was at launch.

I'm finding it fun, but then I just want to come home from work and let off steam, and squashing snipers roof camping with a hovercraft is fun

Harpoon Ultimate edition is going for less than £8 right now on the Matrix Games website. no brainer for that money, for me anyway.

At the prices it’s at I’ll give it a miss for a while methinks.

I don't blame you. I won't touch it for a while until they sort out the bugs.

Also not keen on the specialists. It's like they've turned it into a BF/CoD: Warzone cross.

To be honest, there’s not any new games that really grab my attention right now. I have Gran Turismo 7 pre ordered and Elden Ring too (though that’s dependent on it not becoming a Dark Souls clone)

I’ve gone back to Mass Effect Legendary Edition on my PS5 and I’m enjoying mooching about on Skyrim again too. Nothing new gen seems to have a good enough plot to grip me.

I'm working my way through Jurassic World Evolution 2 after I enjoyed the first so much when I got it as a free game with Games with Gold.

Well I say working... There's not much of that going on at the minute - a storm took out my fence on the Tyrannosaur enclosure and Mr & Mrs Chompy are currently terrorising my guests.

Does that work ok with Windows 10 etc or do we have to fiddle around?

The hit detection is a lottery at best and the loadout options are an arse . Still needs work

The thing is you see the response from certain quarters thats its ok to release an unfinished game !
Mad I tell you

Oh and avoid the Portal - homemade servers to stroke ego by unbalancing the game - tank maps with no anti tank capability for the ground troops

Yesterday I found out about a little exploit on the Kaleidoscope map and people have been using it in single/co-op to kill farm. I tried it myself and got 308 kills with a LMG in a single round. It's a good way to unlock most, if not all of your weapons attachments. Because I'm crap at conquest out of a vehicle, I've found it hard to unlock much of anything.

What you need to do is play Breakthrough on the above map. Select single player/co-op and stick the AI skill on beginner.

All you need to do is take the first two sectors as normal. Then, when you get to third and final sector you head to the skyscraper and into the lifts on the left hand side as you go through the doors. Go up to the top floor and immediately turn left out of the lift fall down off the little platform you're stood on. Head round the corner (where the enemy can't follow you) and stand behind the pipes you come across. You can then fire at the enemy soldiers but they can rarely hit you. Use the specialist Angel to restock your ammo as desired and Robert is your father's brother.

Now I don't know if this will work for the Xbox One version as there are differences in map size and design between that and the Xbox Series S/X version.

well, I've extracted it to a folder on the C drive and ran the installer as admin, it's not told me to bugger off immediately...

UPDATE - you may have problems with the odd version, but the huge bulk of them appear to load up fine within Win 10 (I've got Win10 Pro 64-bit on this machine). there's certainly no issues with the Ultimate Commander's Edition that I can see. I did get 'invalid reg key' messages on installing the sub-versions (it comes as 5 files of about 700mb with one of them being the master install .exe, then it runs seperate installers for each set - so you end up with 4 shortcuts on the desktop for each one) but they don't seem to actually affect the game installation in any way from what I can see. UCE seems to run fine as I say, the really old editions are configured to run within Dosbox as they come with no further setup needed.

Cool story bruh.

Have you tried Kingdom Come: Deliverance? If plot is what you like, that's got incredible depth.

I was a big fan of ME and Skyrim too. If you want other suggestions for "good games" then you could take a look at any of the following... Total War Troy / Three Kingdoms / Warhammer 2... Mount & Blade 2 - Bannerlord... Gears Tactics... XCOM 2... or for something completely different which is not short on plot & intrigue - Crusader Kings 3.

Actually got all of those games. I've gone back to Skyrim and ME. Waiting for more content from CK3 then I'll go back. Only downside, for me, to Kingdom Come was the strict adherence to their "Realistic Combat Sim" controls. Otherwise, it was great.

Troy and Mount and Blade are also favourites. Not appreciated enough I think.
