Extract:
More recently Beating Retreat has become more closely associated with ceremony and in the Royal Marines, since the 1950s, it has become customary to perform this ritual every 3 years on Horse GuardsParade in celebration of the birthday of theirCaptain General, His Royal Highness Prince Phillip,
Duke of Edinburgh.

This year promises to be especially remarkable on two accounts. Firstly in 2003 the event had to be cancelled owing to the manpower requirements placed on the Band Service to support both the Fire Brigade strike and of course the Invasion of Iraq. Second this yearmarks Prince Phillips 85th birthday.
