UK soldier killed in Afghan blast

A British soldier has been killed in an explosion while on patrol in southern Afghanistan.

The soldier, from the Joint Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group, died after the blast on Monday afternoon.

British army spokesman Lt Col Nick Richardson said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends so affected by this tragic event."

The soldier's family has been informed. A total of 187 British soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since 2001.

RIP and sincere condolences to the victim's family, friends and comrades. As its name implies, the Joint Force EOD Group is tri-Service so this will have a wider than normal impact.
