Capt Lalit Garung

OK,Well today I recieved a reply via my MLA.

Thank you.........
Spike sent you a copy of an article from the Daily Mail which stated that Capt Gurung had been prevented from coming to the UK for medical treatment because he could not afford the £500 visa fee.

Whilst there was a provision for gratis visa applications from destitute persons in existance prior to April 2008,this is no longer in operation.Even under the earlier provision it is unlikely that Capt Gurung would have qualified.
Capt Gurung is in reciept of a Gurkha pension from the MOD & cannot be deemed destitute.Given that Capt has what can be regarded as a high income by Nepali standards,we do not consider that he & his family should be entitled to gratis visas when other Nepali applicants would be expected to pay the fee.
Parliment has determined that the visa operation should be run without reliance on funding from the taxpayer.
As a result, the UK Border agency operations in the UK & overseas are edpendent on the income from the visa fees. This means that any visa issued gratis is paid for by other applicants.

Our visa section in Kathmandu was therefore, unable to waive the visa fee for Capt Gurung.
Yours sincerly,
Lin Homer
Chief Executive
So there we have it!
A brave Soldier's contribution is'nt even worth £500!!!!!!

Spike,

Of course a brave soldier's service is a priceless thing (though certain politicans seem to think otherwise.) However, it seems to me that they have a point in denying a gratis visa. If he does receive a pension and is still unable to afford the visa (I think £500 is pretty steep!) Then perhaps we or another charitable institute ought to be helping him out. Whilst I still think that this seems pretty harsh, I do in some way understand their decision.

Just so I have it clear, the people who need a triple signed form to make a decision (let alone wipe their arse) are in control of the health and destiny of those who make battle decisions in a heartbeat.

Yup, thought som

the moral of the story here is that if you recruit people into your military to serve for you, you must be prepared to treat them as your own from thereon in. If you're not able to do that, don't recruit them.

Is there nobody within the government able to take stock of the bigger picture lately and see just what an awful mess they're making?

Light up the batman light in the sky thing, except with a ball-gag and chains in sillouete. MDN has done this sort of thing before, he'd be the best to organise it, if he can spare the time.

First though we should make sure that there's a way of getting the tokens through to Capt Gurung.

Will gladly chip in. Even if we were to give just £10 each that would only mean 50 of us. Given the number of people on ARRSE £500 will be a doddle.

I'll chip in 50p.

Sorry 15 quid.
