Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. One of the gauges for the L1A1 SLR was the .297" barrel gauge... was this the one that shouldn't drop through the barrel ?
  2. Depends how bad the barrel is!
It sits at around 7.54mm so should run.
    Hope this helps.
  3. Thanks.
  4. Ages since I touched one but my Boys' Book of the LIA1 (as issued to me at SEME) says, under 'Rifle L1A1, Inspection Sequence'; Item 4:

    - "View and gauge barrel .297 acc.", which means the gauge should run -

Also under 'Repair or Condition (Test Firing)'; Item 3:

-Barrels - Bent, cut or pitted' Test firing required for accuracy at Unit or Field, provided that plug 0.297" is accepted.

So, yes, it has to go through, cleanly, as I was given to understand. :)
  5. ISTR the .297" was the bore gauge, which had to run; wasn't the .301" the excessive wear gauge which wasn't supposed to go through? Similar to the .306" for GPMG.

I still have my extractor removal tool, just in case...

    And sleep.
  6. correct
  7. Hahaha,

Extractor tool, loads of fun to make (all hack saw and hand filed) mine is now long gone.
