One of the gauges for the L1A1 SLR was the .297" barrel gauge... was this the one that shouldn't drop through the barrel ?

Depends how bad the barrel is!
It sits at around 7.54mm so should run.
Hope this helps.
Thanks.

Ages since I touched one but my Boys' Book of the LIA1 (as issued to me at SEME) says, under 'Rifle L1A1, Inspection Sequence'; Item 4:

- "View and gauge barrel .297 acc.", which means the gauge should run -

Also under 'Repair or Condition (Test Firing)'; Item 3:

-Barrels - Bent, cut or pitted' Test firing required for accuracy at Unit or Field, provided that plug 0.297" is accepted.

So, yes, it has to go through, cleanly, as I was given to understand. :)

ISTR the .297" was the bore gauge, which had to run; wasn't the .301" the excessive wear gauge which wasn't supposed to go through? Similar to the .306" for GPMG.

I still have my extractor removal tool, just in case...

And sleep.
