Caffeine Addiction

  1. Right, I'm addicted to caffeine. I don't just mean I like coffee a lot. I probably get through (at least) 20 mugs a day, If it's instant I normally have about 2 heaped spoonfuls per cup and if it's from the cafe I ask for a treble shot.

It gets worse. Most people find coffee keeps them awake and alert, I can't sleep unless I've just had one, and frankly, I'm about as alert as a very tired slug. I often wake at about 4am with a blinding headache and the a quick coffee sorts it out. If I go more than about 4 hours during the day without a brew I get headaches so bad they would (probably) kill an average civilian. These headaches are the "world go away I'm laying down" type. Caffeine does not make me hyper, I'm generally a calm type. This addiction has crept up on me over many many years but I've been aware of it since about 2001.

My questions to the healthy medic types.

    1. Is this going to do me any lasting damage, if i carry on?

    2. Does anyone have any suggestions how to go about stopping. Alternatives etc, Cold turkey?

Thanks for your time, I'm off to the cafe.

  2. Cold turkey mate or ween yourself off it slowly.

And it probably is doing you lasting damage because of all the headaches. Caffiene is a diaretic(sp) it causes you to de-hydrate and this is probably the cause of the headaches. Try switching to orange juice or some other fruit juice or plain old fashioned water.

edited for being a spelling mong

Im glad you have clarified my headache situation, I thought it was brought on by the copious amounts of alcohol I consume prior to sleep.

  4. Holy cow - 20 mugs a day... of that strong stuff!!

I thought I was bad with about 6 mugs of coffee, of moderate strength. (Although tend to switch to light tea - Earl Grey - in the evening).

Am sure I would be a jittery, sweaty wreck with that amount of coffee/caffeine.

  5. Floppy,

I feel for you. I used to sit next to a chap who hammered the 'life blood of champions'.

He wasn't as profilic as you, but came close. He also weened himself off slowly, just reducing by a couple of cups every week. He also got a rocket up his bottom from his wife when she realised how much he was investing into Starbucks on a daily basis.

Hope this link proves useful. AA for coffee addicts?!

Last time I was working in the fatherland, members of the firm were socialising with a group of American lawyer types, who were doing shots of expresso (as opposed to alcohol) because it made for a "way cool night"

    Each to their own!
