Logged on to t'internet last night to find out BT had very kindly upgraded my broadband from 512 K/min to 2.2Mb/min, all gratis! Goes like sh*t of the proverbial now.

Nice people! :D Apparently they are doing this to all customers over the coming months.

It is due to competition, advances in technology and them dropping the acceptible levels of loss for ADSL.

Be aware though, that as more people take advantage of increase in speed, the service you receive will degrade. You can guarantee that BT are not going to increase core internet bandwidth in line with demand, therefore the contention rates go up.

Still, it was a brucie bonus to get it for nothing.

NTL have upgraded all of their speeds. Mine went from 1.5 meg to 3 meg but it now has a 40 gig a month bandwidth cap. No doubt BT will do the same.
