The Fixed Term Parliaments Act was the price for the Liberal Democrats joining the Coalition in 2010. They were worried about the Tories cutting and running at a convenient point in the electoral cycle and leaving them electorally vulnerable in the resulting GE.
One of the ironies of the Brexit process is that the act, in conjunction with Gina Miller's court ruling, makes it very difficult indeed for the Remain bloc of MPs in Westminster to derail Brexit. May can't cut and run by calling a GE without the support of parliament, and any meaningful change to Brexit will have to be put to a public vote in Parliament - which could lead to multiple MP's who voted to stop Brexit losing their seats in any resulting GE.

Mummies boy who did ok until things went wrong and then sulked.
Remember when Dominic Raab assumed his appointment as Brexit Secretary would give him a big part in shaping the United Kingdom's approach to negotiating its exit from the European Union, and he thought he was involved in the Brexit negotations, like David Davis naievely assumed before him
