Yes, which makes what my friend said to me yesterday all the more interesting. He really does not like Boris Johnson and thinks that he will be a disaster but he fully acknowledges that Theresa May (who he describes as 'lovely') is electorally toxic. Katy Balls is making the latter point too.
There are other Tory candidates other than BoJo. Sajid Javid (for example) has been lining himself up for the top slot and might not do too bad a job.
BoJo might be a good PM anyway - he made a fairly good job of being Mayor of London and - the occasional gaffe aside - has been a fairly good minister. BoJo's problem is that he hides his intelligence by playing the fool a little. @FORMER_FYRDMAN made the point some time back that as soon as he became the Mayor of London he should have cultivated a more serious demeanour. A bit more gravitas, and he'd have been well positioned to go for the top slot - instead he's continued to play the part of 'Bumbling Boris'.
