Er, Regs had no preserve over my warrant card, we volunteered, not just needing a job and if we had of been needed, we would have gone; as you know, many reserves fought in the sand pits - I wouldn't deny them the right to have a say; others served at home. We all served in ways you might not even be aware of.

Have a great night.
The point of my post went totally over your head. Never mind.

Back in the late 1990s the Project Fear was Y2K. Planes would crash, power would go out, there would be no food or water.

01/01/00 and sod all happened. My cheap alarm went off. My car started. Mcdonalds served me breakfast.

Y2K Project Fear turned out to be bollox. Almost overnight the consultancies and doom websites vanished. Fat idiots who had no idea what they were doing scuttled away, waiting the next fear project.

01/02/20 is going to be the same.
I worked over the millennium. My mother was panicking because the Bug might sink the ship.

Yes, mother - because a slack handful of computers going tits-up will cause the hull to fail how, exactly? I mean, it's not like we don't turn them off from time to time without sinking, is it?

The possibility that catastrophe was averted by a concerted effort seems to have escaped you.

And 1/2/20 isn't really the pivotal date, 31/12/20 is.

Without a lot of those people doing their work in the background, simple things like using ATM machines, banking wouldn't have worked. Easy to laugh when stuff works. Banks rely on precison timing and dates.

''Calling out other arrsers who never served in the Forces, is the preserve of those arrsers who joined up to the Regulars. ''

I happen to disagree. Now, if something went over my head, send key settings, over.

This thread could be derailing OP. Oh dear, how sad, never mind.

Fortunately a lot of people worked very hard to make sure that the real risks at the time did not happen.

No, the real risks were nothing to do with your home computer, PC, or other such toys.

In 1998 I came back from Asia and started working for Australia's largest telco.

Part of my job was reviewing Y2K findings and warnings. Every consulting group in the world had suddenly become “y2k experts”. We were bombarded with absolute rubbish from idiots clambering onto the Gravy Train. Every report was full of dire warnings, most of which were absolute rubbish. But we kept paying.

Almost overnight the smaller consultants closed, the web sites predicting disaster vanished. By mid 2000 it was like it never happened. Apart from the Porsche driving consultants.

I spent the next few years cleaning up the shambles they left behind.

I couldn't give shït whether you disagree or not. Slagging off 'never served civvies' is the preserve of ex Regs. Not Reservists.

You seem to be an alcoholic.

As usual.

As a non-served civvy I reserve the right to retaliate in kind ;)

OK, I am a MOD contractor.
