Brass balls

    Being a "Pongo" with a long family history of the "Andrew" on my mothers side I was curious about the saying ,"To freeze the balls of a brass monkey.Uncle Jimmy A one time Fleet chief in the Med (Wartime) ex Ganges boy had this wee tale about the expression, because of climatic change a brass tray was used to store the cannonballs in a pyra mid form and if the weather became cold the balls would retain their integrity because of the brass foundation unless it became intensively cold .Going to catch the liberty boat for a few wets, hear from someone maybe later.

    They should never have stopped the "Grog" ration,see the work it achieved when"Coaling" at sea

  3. Yes the expression 'freeze the balls off a brass monkey' does come from the fact the racks used to store cannonballs were infact brass and were called monkeys.

    Not to be confused with this
