Yet more disgraceful, undemocratic behaviour from Johnson.

Boris Johnson is to strip the Electoral Commission of the power to prosecute law-breaking, just weeks after it launched an investigation into his controversial flat refurbishment.

Any criminal activity / Law breaking should be investigated by the Police, the CPS and tried in Court.

Why not a specialist organisation like the EC?

Because that is why we have Police, the CPS and Courts

The clue was in the part that said Criminal Investigations.

However you could also FOI Chloe, and ask her.

Chloe Smith, constitution minister, issued a statement saying the proper place for criminal investigations and prosecutions relating to electoral law was the Crown Prosecution Service and the police.

The EC are rather biased towards the Remain side still and need disbanding/hanging.

You can't see any reason why Johnson removing their prosecution powers could be suspect.

Quelle surprise.

Did anyone watch Matthew Goodwin on the Andrew Neil Show, GB News, Wednesday 23rd?
He was discussing Britain after Brexit and suggesting leaning left on economics and leaning right on culture.
In one sense he's right, that the voting demographic changed, much to Labour's surprise. He believes that it's a permanent realignment and that there aren't enough votes in the South East to benefit Labour long term.

How far can we afford to lean left economically? If it was territory the Social Democrats would fear to go that might get my alarm bells ringing. In fact left of centre on economics and right of centre on culture seems exactly where the current Social Democrats are. I wonder what William Coulson, Patrick O'Flynn and Rod Liddle would make of that?

I don't think it's possible to entirely (or even largely) decouple the two; e.g. a left-leaning culture will bring forth left-leaning economics, e.g. increased spending on certain parts of the welfare state, overseas aid and increased spending caused by higher immigration into the UK.

Yes, definitely and a right leaning culture would be expected to resist big state, big spending and high taxes.

Duncan Bannatyne was given a question from one of the GB News viewers along the lines of how could wealth be spread (alarm bells) more evenly. He said, if you want to spread wealth, you go out and make a fortune then spread your wealth.

I think Matthew is taking the view that this is where the voter base are and so this is where the Conservative party must adapt to. However, many disenchanted former Labour voters may have moved towards the centre, at least culturally and some economically too.

There is a reason I keep recommending his book.

The book that some have observed as a fair summary, but tainted by the (academic) authors inherent left leaning bias.

That book you mean?

Goodwin is anything but left leaning.

Best take that up with those cleverer than I who expressed the opinions I summarised.

Their comments remind me of a bit of time I spent with Ken Livingstone, what became known in the circle I was in as A to B to Z logic. He had a habit of drawing on two or three things that his interlocutors could accept (A to B) and then draw a completely off the wall conclusion (Z). It was fascinating to watch and I think that he truly believed in the infallibility of his logic.

Just because there are those out there who are less impressed with the work than you obviously are does not make this discussion a "skip" by the way.

I don't mind either, if the company is interesting.
