"Boris Johnson to take aim at MoD over wasted cash..."

Police out trade routes? You are having a laugh aren't you? When on earth did we last do that?
Southern Mediterranean coast of Europe is just that Europe, an EU issue not UKs, we will be too busy impounding EU Trawlers to get involved.
Far flung future tribal possible conflicts? RNs current little ships already deal with that if and when required, which to be frank isn't very often. Still can't see a need to retain any of the big surface fleet.
I don't think so.

The provisional award of the contract (Fisheries Vessel Monitoring System) to a French part government-owned contractor, Collecte Localisation Satellites (CLS), also raises questions given the often fractious nature of the relationship between the UK and French fishing fleets, which is not likely to improve post-Brexit, and the political power of the French fishing lobby.”

That job has been subcontracted out to the French....

outside the EU, everything, we have go to back to the future And police our trade routes
we will be rebuilding trade with places like South America, and west Africa is hardly the Home Counties, is it? And then there is that enduring mess along the southern med coast and into the ME.
warlords, raiding your neighbouring warlord and piracy are expected to become a staple of the worlds failed places as Africa and the MENA population doubles over the next 30 years.

Its not the most recent article, however sh1t hasn't changed that much in the realms of GDP

Britain’s service industry recorded its 12th consecutive quarter of growth on Thursday and now accounts for almost 80 per cent of the economy

The sector is also evolving. The UK’s reliance on financial services has dimmed, and the sector is 10 per cent smaller than it was before the financial crisis. The gap has been filled by IT and professional services — ranging from law to architecture to management consulting — which have grown by 25 per cent. Some companies are also changing the range of services they offer. Stephen Pollard, an electrical engineer by training, now runs a management consulting team at Arup. Instead of working on traditional engineering projects, he is focused on a question posed by Transport for London: if lorry drivers are able to make more eye contact with cyclists, would it reduce the number of road accidents? Arup, the engineers behind the Sydney Opera House, now specialises in everything from advice on security to consulting for theatres. Other growth areas include the vibrant creative industries, encompassing everything from computer games to musical shows.

Now how do you protect these type of trade activities with big grey war canoes?

95% of everything entering the UK comes in by sea.

Don't worry we give the French a kicking every 100 years or so, they know their place.

Yeah, that makes perfect sense in the context of this discussion about cutting back the Armed Forces.
It doesn't take much, they are only 20 odd miles away

Perhaps if well-meaning Western NGOs stopped interfering, the population of those countries would return to a sustainable level?

alas, we are where we are.

take Africa.... an extra 1.3 Billion people in the next 30 years, in a continent already short of water and resources that’s creating no jobs. What can Possibly go wrong!

and the Middle East - North Africa? I’d say it’s petrol and matches, but that oils running out while their populations explode, with food, water and jobs already in short supply.

population of Africa and MENA will be @ 3.5 Billion by 2050 - more than India and China combined.

we’re going to thank God for that 22 mile wide anti tank ditch God so thoughtfully provided when that lot start heading north en masse to take from rich EUrope.

Just out of curiosity, is this comment in line with the CS Code?

ps - any luck on finding out:

how SSKs work?
how many engineers in a ship's engineering department?
how and why the DDG51 class were procured?
horizon v DDG51 timeline?
what type of gun is "good" and what is "bad"?

Here we go a really good start to the Defence Review, yet another NAO report showing how sharp and excellent our VSCCs and VSOs are. Top third? Most it seems would struggle to get three stars at McDonalds:

"The watchdog added that the lack of financial discipline was “increasingly affecting the armed forces’ ability to maintain and enhance the UK’s military capability” and said the MoD needed to determine its strategic priorities".

Bl00dy sory but I struggle to understand how the MoD, with the money they get, can even get close to maintaining capability let alone enhancing* it.

We may or may not have needed F35 or two carriers, we may or may not have needed troop/cargo carrying planes and smaller ships and with the Land element currently in a mess of its own making because of its failure to effectively plan its equipment strategy early enough* what can the NAO expect with no clear and steady direction of what the government wants from its Armed Forces and its failure to properly fund what it wants and instead expecting year on year savings its no wonder we are in the mess we are!

* How do you enhance anything when the person(s) allocating budgets expect you to cut costs so you can achieve the goals they've set you?

Edited to add

I'm not in anyway saying the VSOs are doing a good job, they clearly aren't or can't, but to have any chance they need to be given very clear direction on what the AF are expected to do (not just the old bland statement about protecting the UKs interests etc) with the equipment they have and the money to invest.

Nearly everyone on here who served will have served in units where QMs get MBEs for turning off the lights and heating and have experienced DIO/RFCA refusing to spend money on buildings or infrastructure and all because of year on year savings FFS
