Bliar eyes plum UN job after No 10

Tony Blair is keeping open the option of a move to New York with his wife Cherie for a top job at a revamped United Nations after he steps down as Prime Minister, Government sources have indicated.

Downing Street refused last night to rule out the possibility of a transatlantic switch for the Blairs, which would allow them to be nearer their eldest, Euan, 22, who starts a masters degree course in international relations at Yale University in September.

Such a move would not only keep Mr Blair, who is only 53, on the world stage after he quits but also offer money-spinning possibilities for the couple on the lecture circuit, and a glamorous new way of life.

A spokesman for Mr Blair was careful not to dismiss the idea, saying merely that he did not want to enter discussions about the Prime Minister's long-term future.

He's certainly not going to get the top slot, all the Arab countries would have a fit if he tried it. Plus IIRC there's been an unofficial tradition that a British diplomat holds one of the most senior positions under the Secretary General but in return the UL doesn't try for the position.

Wait a minute this is Tony Blair:
New Labour
New Leader
New Job

You can ignore anything that smacks of tradition if it gets in the way:
Hunting
Lords
Habeas Corpus
Due Process
Independent Foreign policy
and on and on and on

As far as I am aware convention has it that no P5 state gets to have one of its nationals as the UNSG.
