Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. As this is my first year in the mess, and the summer function is looming I have a question.

The dress is Black Tie - Now I'm happy with that.

But what type of shoes do you wear in a Tux? I don't want to turn up wearing what look like a pair of school shoes. Are George boots acceptable?
  2. A good pair (£150) of Italian patent leather should do the trick.!
  3. Black shoes, the plainer the better. Definitely not brogues. Definitely not boots.
  4. Being a civvie, I can't speak for any particular rules for a Military Mess.
    However, Chokin is absolutely right.
Accepted footwear with a dinner suit (only Americans call it a tux) is plain black patent shoes, usually lace-up rather than slip-on.
