Stars Come out for Forces Fundraiser

Members of the UK military community are being urged to join Ewan McGregor, James Blunt, Al Murray, and the Osbournes in support of the British Forces Broadcasting Service's new charity fundraiser, The Big Salute.

Billed as the Forces' own 'Red Nose Day', the annual event is designed to encourage British Forces communities, family and friends around the globe to help raise money for five nominated Service charities.

The fundraiser kicks off on BFBS Television on Sunday 4 May 2008 at 1845 hours with a special launch show. The show will also be streamed live on the internet so that supporters in the UK can watch and take part.

The Big Salute will continue on BFBS Radio until Sunday 11 May 2008. BFBS radio has stations in ten countries, and can be heard in the UK on Sky channel 0211 or online via the BFBS website.

Although BFBS TV and Radio entertain British Forces overseas, from the Falklands to Afghanistan, this is an event that those in the UK can also take part in.

Helen Williams, BFBS Television Controller, said: "We wanted to show our respect, admiration and support for those who serve their country, particularly those who have been seriously injured as a result. And we want to encourage all members of the British Forces community to join in with our campaign."

Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Richard Dannatt, is joining celebrities from stage and screen to put his weight behind the campaign and recording a special message of support for the event.

Proceeds from the Big Salute will be split between five Forces charities: BLESMA (The British Limbless Ex-Service Men's Association); Combat Stress; Headley Court; Veterans Aid, which helps homeless ex-Servicemen; and St Dunstan's, which helps Service personnel with sight loss.

Thanks for support, Rockape. Just home from doing show - went really well I think. Helen Chamberlain from Soccer Am turned up to appear on show, which was a bonus. Took a few hundred quid on the phone lines, and the auctions are doing really well.

Auctions don't close until midday Sunday 11th, so take a look at www.bfbs.com/bigsalute

Signed Liverpool FC football; Army Navy rugby signed shirts and ball; Zulu film poster signed by Sir Michael Caine... Day out with Army Rally team, and loads more

Tired but happy
