bench presses

i was just wondering do brench presses have the same effect as press ups? so if i crack out loads of bench presses will they improve the amount of press ups i can do?

They do, in that they work your arms and chest muscles but the main difference is that bench presses dont work your back, abs and legs like a pressup does.

Just think about it.

When doing a pressup, you have to keep your body straight. This takes a lot of effort and strength. Contrast that to a bench press where your body is supported.

Use the press up as a general strengthening exercise and the bench press as a conditiong exercise for the arms and chest.
