Belgian SOF (SFG BE) to expand by 50%

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Belgian SOF to expand

According to this article (in French) the SFG BE, the belgian SOF unit, should soon expand to reach a new establishment of 159 pax from their current strength of 111, representing a 50% hike in strength while the belgian army is currently losing several thousand troops because of severe cuts. An airborne infantry unit, 1 Para, will be disbanded.

The SFG will also leave their current garisson of Flawinne to go to Heverlee, close to Louvain, which was their previous home base.
Recruitment of new special operators is expected to be very difficult as very few candidates manage to make the grade.

As a footnote, the SFG BE is the only NATO SOF unit of my knowledge were EU citizenship is sufficient to join; candidates do not need to be belgians as long as they have a EU passport.
