Bank of England refuses to return gold to Venezuela

Maduro scrambles to bring Venezuela’s gold back from the UK
President Maduro of Venezuela is trying to repatriate at least 14 tonnes of gold held at the Bank of England, fearing that access could be frozen under US sanctions against his regime.
The Bank has refused to release the gold bars, worth about £420 million, according to sources. British officials are understood to have insisted that standard measures to prevent money-laundering be taken — including clarification of the Venezuelan government’s intentions for the gold.
It is an interesting situation. Yes, it is you gold. What? You wish to get it back? But first of all tell us how it will be used.
Suppose that you deposit money in a bank and go to the bank to get money back but as a result you hear - tell us - how you will use the money?

Sounds a bit like Russia!

Remind us how Putin 'earned' his trillions.......,it certainly wasn't by legally earning them.

While your at it you can also explain why the Russian state didn't end up with cash when many of the state industries were sold. (By sold I mean stolen by corrupt individuals)

While you are also only talking about a metal, in the form of gold, it's worth noting that you are posting from a country that 'stole' millions of German citizens by not returning them back to Germany after WW2.

I'd suggest stealing humans is far far far worse that not returning gold.

By the way, are you suggesting ruturning gold to any country who might then use that wealth to finance the torture or ill treatment of their citizens is a good idea?
I ask as you yourself have mentioned the UK and whether it should seize the assets/cash of Russians in the UK.

Wasn't there something about St Petersburg trolls spending hours trying to find anything anti-west that negates Russia's many and multiple crimes but being too busy to acknowledge those crimes?

Oh look, the Russia fans are clubbing together to support each other, aww bless.

I guess it's better for them than talking about things like the recent Russian election being rigged, Putin stealing money from the state, Russian induscriminate carpet bombing in Syrian, Russia shooting down an airliner, then deliberately hampering the investigation, Russia trying to murder a former Russian spy but actually murdering a British citizen, how the Russian force on the ground in Syria was decimated by the Americans, the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine etc etc.

I see that this post got an 'old' from one of the 'anyone but Russia' trolls.

Oh the irony of a poster getting an 'old' from a poster who has said the UK need to show its evidence from the Salisbury case OVER FORTY TIMES despite not once being able to back it up, and despite UK law saying otherwise.

Oh the irony, oh the stupidity !

Maduro scrambles to bring Venezuela’s gold back from the UK
All becoming clear now:
The Venezuelan constitution says that sales of mineral reserves must be approved by the national assembly but Mr Maduro has ignored parliament, claiming that it is run by oligarchs, since it came under opposition control in a landslide election in 2015.

Turkey has become the biggest buyer of Venezuelan gold, partly because of the friendship between Mr Maduro and President Erdogan. American officials have said that the gold, which is drawn from reserves strip-mined by gangs overseen by the military, is being resold by Turkey to Iran, which is also subject to US sanctions.

Mr Maduro is a frequent visitor to Turkey, where he was filmed this year smoking a Cuban cigar during a meal at the celebrity chef Salt Bae’s restaurant in Istanbul. The clip went viral and critics said it showed that Mr Maduro had lost touch with people in Venezuela, where food is increasingly scarce.
The last 160 tonnes ‘disappeared’
In 2011, Hugo Chávez, Mr Maduro’s predecessor and mentor, repatriated 160 tonnes of gold from banks in the US and Europe. Most of the reserves have since been discreetly shipped out and sold. The gold held at the Bank of England was used until last year to back loans of hard currency to Venezuela by other banks.
More EU sanctions:
Yesterday, the EU extended sanctions on 18 individuals in the Maduro regime for a year, citing human rights violations and an undermining of democracy and the rule of law. Those affected, including the vice-president and the economy minister, are banned from travelling to Europe, and assets they hold in Europe are frozen. The EU also has an embargo on the sale of arms and “equipment for internal repression”.
In other words (as seen on Zero Hedge), agitprop merchant spins agitprop lapped up by the ‘usual suspects’

Elaborate, please, what exactly is clear?
The last $160M ‘disappeared’
What $160M do you mean? $160M are not mentioned in your quote. What do you mean by 'disappeared'? It is not your gold anyway, not British, not American.
But Venezuela as a state is not under any sanctions and the Bank of England doesn't refer to any samctions in its decision not to release Venezuelan gold.

Did you not read the quote I posted?

My bad, 160 tonnes. I know you don't worry about 'money laundering' and 'unexplained wealth orders' as that's where your 'crooks and thieves' get their money from.
But Venezuela as a state is not under any sanctions and the Bank of England doesn't refer to any samctions in its decision not to release Venezuelan gold.
I never said they were. Quite rightly the BoE is asking questions. I'm sure if they satisfy the criteria, it will be released. If not ...........

E2A: a tonne of gold is over $64.3M so 160 tonnes is a tad more than $160M

It belongs to the people of Venezuela not the dictator, I know that is a difficult concept for a Russian.
