Has he not thought of filling them in with stones or would that be against the law (I was just thinking I'd heard somewhere it was illegal to interfere with any badger or badger sett).
It would be incredibly against the law. Even giving a badger a dirty look can get you a stiff fine.

You can apply to Natural England to fill in a sett, you have to meet very strict criteria to justify it, and pay for the permit and for their visits, they give you a set time to do it and you have to fit no-re-entry catflap-things to all the holes. When NE is satisfied that they're all out, you can fire up the JCB.

By this time the badgers have dug another sett about 100 yards away.

SNH have tried that crap with otters too. Funny how many you see flat on the road these days!
