Australia on fire

Jeremy Clarkson says Australia is on fire as God didn’t want people to live there.
Oh dear The Grand Tour now not going to Aussie, be safer in South America?
Not forgetting Seamen, their tour of Cambodia and Vietnam

It's a bit salty that episode

Be fair. Religion and socialism usually end up producing the more drastic population reduction measures in the end anyway.....
A bit drastic though, much easier to make people have less babies (yes even you Loretta...)

And doesn't work.
The 20th C started with 1.6 billion and ended with 6 billion despite communism and two nasty wars plus Spanish flu.
We either control ourselves or disappear.

We basically agree.
The Chinese with their one child policy are the only people doing anything positive but the RoW needs to follow suit. The EU and UN are doing the opposite.
I hate to say this but I am coming round to the idea that the Chinese ain't so bad after all.
They have been very benign in their treatment of the HK students compared to many other countries.
Their attitude to the Uigars was re education rather than ethnic cleansing which might have expected.
I still wouldn't want to live there though.
I think they have changed their one child policy, checked on google fu it appears so

On this day in 2015, the Chinese government officially announces the end of its one-child policy, ending the most extreme state birth control project in history after 35 years.22

I agree, if I were a "Consultant" to God on this, there is a very obvious, quick win and perhaps a second one.

Obviously God doesn't exist, he tried to work his magic in Ethiopia 25 years ago and Geldoff beat him.
And with Aids, Ebola and countless diseases that doctors and scientists can now extend life for longer than the diseases take away. Curse those brilliant doctors and scientists.

Still, if Trump can trigger a nucular war, once it's over and the fires are out, the human population ought to be down to a manageable level.

I don't see that happening, it would only benefit fundamentalist religious types who want to see an end to the human race.
Most thankfully are not that dumb.

I thought they had stopped it but wasn't sure.

Archaeological evidence from ash deposits in the Coral Sea indicates that fire was already a significant part of the Australian landscape over 100,000 years ago.[27] Over the last 70,000 years it became more frequent with one explanation being the use by hunter-gatherers as a tool to drive game, to produce a green flush of new growth to attract animals, and to open up impenetrable forest.

SOME RELEVANT HISTORY.

Australia’s most extensive Bushfires were known as the ‘Black Thursday’ Bushfires, on the 6th Feb 1851 when the temperature hit an incredible 117°F (47.2°C) at 11am in Melbourne, and quarter of Victoria, 5 million hectares in total were burnt out (10 times more than from the current Bushfires in NSW). 12 lives were lost and one million sheep and thousands of cattle where lost.

Thomas McCombie recorded the scene in Melbourne on that day:
"For two months preceding, the country had been under the desiccating winds, which appeared to be highly charged with electricity. The herbage was parched up, and everything that the eye could rest upon was dry, dusty, and disagreeable. The 6th of February dawned much as very hot days generally do; the roseate tints of the horizon were rather brighter and more lurid than usual - the glassed glare over the sky more vividly perceptible. The north wind set strongly in early in the morning, and by eleven o'clock in the fore-noon it had increased to almost a hurricane.
‘’In the streets of Melbourne the heat was intense, and the atmosphere densely oppressive. Clouds of smoke and dust hung over the city. The fires which blazed in the surrounding country no doubt increased the suffocating sensation which was generally experienced. It was hardly possible to go abroad; the streets were nearly deserted; and a few of the persons who were compelled to make the effort to traverse them stalked along with their faces closely enveloped in cloth; no man, however bold, appeared able to face the furiously-suffocating blast, which seemed to wither up their physical energies. By noon, the inhabitants, generally, had shut themselves up in their various dwellings, too happy to have got out of the reach of the overpowering blast. They continued to sit until night listening in terror to the howl of this real sirocco. Had any portion of Melbourne ignited the whole of the city must have been reduced to ashes, as no effort of the inhabitants could have prevented the conflagration from extending and becoming general. The citizens were providentially preserved from so terrible a disaster."

Catastrophic Bushfires hit Victoria again in 1898 Feb 1, known as ‘ Red Tuesday’ when fires burned 260,000 hectares in South Gippsland. Twelve lives lost and more than 2,000 buildings were destroyed - 2,500 homeless.
In 1939 the 13th Jan became known as ‘Black Friday’, the fires in Victoria burned 1.5 to 2 million hectares, killed 71 people and destroyed more than 650 buildings.

In 1944 levels fires in the Western Districts of Victoria destroyed more than 500 houses and caused huge losses in the pastoral industry. Four or more grass fires near Hamilton, Dunkeld, Skipton and Lake Bolac burned about 440,000 hectares in eight hours. Between 15 and 20 people died. The total area covered by grass fires that season was about one million hectares.

In 1962, Fires in the Dandenong Ranges and on the outskirts of Melbourne killed 32 and destroyed more than 450 houses.

In 1965, fires the in Gippsland burned for 17 days, covering 300,000 hectares of forest and 15,000 hectares of grassland. More than 60 buildings and 4,000 stock were destroyed.

In 1969,Two hundred and eighty fires broke out on the 8th Jan, Twelve reached major proportions and burned 250,000 hectares. Twenty-three people died, including 17 motorists at Lara, trapped on the then highway between Geelong and Melbourne. The fires also destroyed 230 houses, 21 other buildings and more than 12,000 stock.

In 1977, widespread fires occurred across the Western District of Victoria. The fires killed four people and burned about 103,000 hectares. More than 198,500 stock, 116 houses and 340 other buildings were also lost.
In 1981, the 16th Feb became known as ‘Ash Wednesday’ more than 100 fires burned 210,000 hectares and killed 47 people. More than 27,000 stock and 2,000 houses were lost.

And that’s just Victoria.

I don't know when that article was written but as of 6th January some 4.9 million hectares were burnt off in NSW so hardly 10 times more than the current bushfires.
And temperatures have exceed that recently with, unfortunately, more to come.

And, according to some reports, 183 people awaiting charges of arson related crimes.

We live on a volatile planet, it's as simple as that. The climate has always been changing, we are in geological timescales just coming out of an Ice Age and the planet is warming up again. Its got little to do with the Human race and more to do with cyclical changes of which we know little about as we have been here for a miniscule amount of time in the grand scheme of things.

The elephant in the room is always too many humans on this planet consuming limited natural resources

Reduce the human population to sustainable levels and a lot of the problem goes away

The easiest and most effective way to control population levels is education and rising living standards

So encourage education and go all out to reduce people's belief in religion and socialism and we can reduce the worlds population without taking more drastic measures
And yet our NHS spends millions on IVF and fertility treatments ......God whomever he is is busy trying to help reduce the population and we are trying to increase it because it's your hooman right to have kids init ?

The POINT being..........this isn't a one off !

Shit happens,Climate Change Happens...naturally.

If people want to live in forests of trees known to be highly flamable, they should make sure they build their homes (Wood and tin ?) far enough away from the 'roman candles'!

An observation, not a criticism of the heroic efforts of firefighters on the frontline, who are now paying the price, for piss poor urban 'planning' !
Also take into account the amount of bullshit bureaucracy you need to plough through to ensure your home is at a safe distance from the burning stuff. You don't get approval first and you get a hefty fine. You have to apply for clearing permits. You then have an inspection of said property and you are told where, what and how much you can clear. You are then given a date to carry out said clearance. If you can't do it on that date you have to inform the relevant authorities and give reasons why. You will then have that permit cancelled and you have to go through the whole stupid rigmarole again. This can take up to six months to go through. So, not really the property owners fault more along the lines of Bureaucratic nonsense fckurey. This applies to Southern states as the black fellas here in the NT just get on and do land management as they have for thousands of years and if you tell them they shouldn't be doing it they just look at you like the dumbfcuk you are and just carry on. Actually, here in the NT you will get a warning for not maintaining your firebreaks.

I've just read in The Australian that blackfellas are exempt from the regulations. I'll put up some links later.

They are indeed exempt as they use the cultural card and good on them for doing it. The problem is that the southern states don't have communities as we do here in the NT and WA. Most of their black fellas are really 1/16th black fella and have settled in quite nicely with the European settlers.

Yes. Blackfellas with blond hair and blue eyes (paging Michael Mansell).

Down near Alice springs there is a tribe that is totally distinguishable from all others. They actually have a recessive gene that gives them a red streak through their hair. Apparently some dirty Jock went through the ladies of the tribe and being a true blue skinned rust headed sweaty created lots of red streaked infants. At first I just though it was a fashion thing seeing most of them are true blackfellas. But no, it appears that the story above is true.
