Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. what was the role of the pioneers attached to r/sigs units???

  2. Dig their toilets?

  3. They are usually not attached to the sigs, but rather to the major HQ (Div, Corps etc) the sig unit is assigned to and their role is defence\security of the HQ.

  4. Fixed that for you.

  5. Not sure about now but in 216 late 80's they were in a defence roll and part of SHQ.

  6. Our chunks used to provide assistance with defence and generally did all the cr4ppy little jobs nobody else could be bothered with. Helping out with the cookhouse and providing manual labour etc.

  7. In 9 Sigs (Early 70's) they provided the Black Hand Gang. They did various jobs around the Tech Block including cleaning and waste burning. A few years later I recall they stagged on with the Dog Section and the former BHG tasks were done by the on duty shifts.

  8. They also manned the security gate and checked passes etc. After the spy thingy in the 80s they also searched bags in and out (with a member of the Sy sect present). Moved MFO boxes in and out, manned the guardroom during the day (lifting the barrier etc) and many other useful jobs. One up at the Troodos det to dig drains, waste burning, general block cleaning etc.
Oh, and got the first round in at the Pink Elephant on a Friday.
