Atlantic Future Forum

Are there any transcripts of the speches? Or any proper coverage beyond Twitter updates?

I thought the discussions were meant to go far beyond that. However, to take your comments and expand on them, Canada is a key contributor to NATO in the Atlantic theatre, which in many ways is NATO's centre of gravity.

Canada also has real scientific and industrial capabilities.

I posted this on the possibility of a war with China thread . UK US cooperation

Closer to home we have the Atlantic to worry about - and increased Russian maritime (including submarine) activity, and Chinese warships visit the Atlantic. Iran continues to threaten oil shipping.

Moscow, Beijing, and Tehran are allies - at least for the purposes of opposing the rules based international system.

The Twitter account for the Atlantic Future Forum is still active. An update was posted just today. Other updates are about news of business deals and things like cooperation with things like cyber security.

Are we moving towards a trade deal with the United States? It would have benefits on both sides of the Atlantic.

Is it time to build a new partnership of nations committed to playing by the rules?
Yes, but how would it deal with the Americans (or the British)?

What does the change of American President mean for the transatlantic partnership and NATO? Am I right in thinking that it means changes in diplomatic personnel as Ambassadors are appointed by the President personally?

Ambassador Johnson was fully up to speed with Britain's commitment to NATO and in the Gulf.

Despite all the talk of American interest shifting to the Pacific, the US is still committed to Atlantic security. This year there has been an exercise in which three ships carrying enough equipment for an armoured division were escorted over the ocean by a carrier strike group. This was the first duck exercise since 1986.

More recently a major ASW exercise was conducted by US forces in the Atlantic.

The planned NATO Defender 2020 was postponed due to COVID-19 and will take place in 2021. It will involve things such a SLOC defence, logistics protected by naval forces including carriers, and amphibious landings.

The US Navy has also reestablished the Atlantic Fleet. The commitment to the European/Atlantic theatre remains.

Remember the Euro Atlantic region is where we live and subject to geopolitical tensions with Vlad and even Xi on our doorstep, and the Atlantic gives us access to the Northern coast of Europe, Eastern coast of the Americas and beyond the Panama Cana; or Cape Horn, and the East coast of Africa and through the strait of Gibraltar or around the Cape of Good Hope..

Global Britain starts with Atlantic Britain, which starts with Maritime Britain.

The US Navy has established a 'tech bridge' in London.

London Tech Bridge

Located in one of the world's top ranked "Tech Hubs" and in a city consistently recognized for global business, the London Tech Bridge is at the forefront of innovation. The London Tech Bridge builds upon the historic technology and innovation relationship between the U.S. and the U.K. The Tech Bridge, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research Global, with headquarters in London since 1946, is able to use their network as a foundation for connecting diverse teams across the full spectrum of organization types.

The London Tech Bridge is truly a two-way bridge that works to move technology and make connections both to and from the U.S. and U.K. Set in a booming technology ecosystem that spans academia, industry and government, the London Tech Bridge is poised to connect and enable technology leaders across a range of technical focus areas. Current focus areas are:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Autonomy and Unmanned Systems
  • Biotechnology
  • Space
  • Lasers and Directed Energy

On the topic of the commitment to Atlantic security, I must have missed this back in December!

SECNAC Announces the Return of the US Atlantic Fleet, focus will be on Russian threat

The move to bring back Atlantic Fleet comes after a 2018 decision to reestablish U.S. 2nd Fleet in Norfolk as a means of focusing more on anti-submarine warfare in the Atlantic and with European allies on the other side of the ocean.

The North Atlantic Sea Lines of Communication are a centre of gravity for NATO. They are also vital for peacetime trade, and a defence priority. Can someone please remind @PhotEx that the UK has committed the carrier capability to NATO Atlantic/GIUK gap operations.
