Asthma in the TA

Discussion in 'Army Reserve' started by confx, Sep 28, 2006.

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. My girlfriend has just asked about joining the TA, problem is she's asthmatic. Does that mean there is no branch she can apply to?

  2. Hopefully.

  4. So if she's asthmatic theres nothing she can do? She said she'd only be particularly interested if there was chance she could go on tour..

  5. On a scale of 1-10 how asmatic is she ?

Ultimately the decision will be taken by the Doctor who performs her medical - the best thing to do is go down to your local unit and ask to see the doc.

  7. Okay from what she's just told me, it's mild and has not been hospitalised since she was two, and it's never got in the way of anything physical before. (she ran the 1500 metres at school in 14-15 minutes, and completed D of E.)
But is prescribed regular asthma medicine and doesn't often use it, she's also at cambridge uni and rows for the college rowing team

Thanks a lot for your help..

(missed it out..on a scale of 1-10 she'd give herself a 5 out of ten at the moment, which is having done not a huge amount of fitness, i'm not sure if asthma improves with fitness?)
  8. My bold. To my mind I think that's the key. They will ask and I think this makes it a guaranteed no unfortunately.
  9. Not to mention 15 minutes for less than a mile may be a problem

Can someone dig out the relevant chapter and verse on this?

I wish we had a TA doc on the forums to answer these questions.

  11. Not to mention 15 minutes for less than a mile may be a problem

She's can do 1.5 miles in 15 minutes, at least i think 1500 metres is 1.5 miles?
  12. The following conditions make a person unsuitable for enlistment

Asthma, wheeze or asthma symtoms (and treatment) during the previous 4 years. Chronic lung diseases (e.g Empysema, bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis) Active tubercolosis.

Apparently. According to an AFCO 5 that I had kicking about the place.
  13. Nyet 1500 metres is 1.5 kilometres

There are 2.5 kilometres to 1.5 miles
  14. A question about the ACF..Do they do regular Army stuff?

For example challenging tabs, phys, firing on range, fire and manouever, field craft etc?
  15. 1,500m is roughly 0,93 miles

    1 mile (stat. or "land")= 1,609m
    1 Mile (nautical)=1,802m

(just from memory, anyone feel free to correct me on this...)
