Artillery ammo and your thoughts.

I'm about to take up a new job in a certain previously HMG facility (with a majestic but map related name) but is now part of a larger 'British' 'Systems' company.

The job is based around artillery ammo....specifically the 105mm or 155mm stuff (I think).

As an ex-REME and mainly aviation specialist this is a bit of a change for me and I'm after some info from the hallowed halls of the Gunners to point me in the right direction.

Basically I'm after any problems, issues, dits, tales and woes you have all had with said ammo and firing systems that I can use to inform me when I am placed in a position of power over the furture of said systems (well i can dream).

So lads and lasses 'fire away' the funny and the serious all helpful.

Thanks

The 4Tonner.

Lightweight 155mm to make it easier for the bunnies to thrown around inside the turret.

Also, if they buy is "so called" ultra lightweight field howitzer, then the ammo needs to be light as there won't be enough heavy lift helis to lift the required ammo forward. See, a valid point!

More tactical nukes please.....it would have been so much easier that way...

but if the "splinter" distance is any greater than 17km...don't bother with the 105 stuff...

pretty happy with the ammo to be honest, does exactrly what it says on the tin, but if the idea of anti-armour direct fire missions is to be taken seriously on a 105, bring back HESH or a new AT shell please! Plain HE would be very very very lucky to score a kill against modern armour.

the american charge system is a nightmare to work with! they fall apart at the most inappropriate times! i know they were working on a replacement that slot together like lego bricks but they were not much better as they barely fit in the charge tubes.
im sure we could come up with a British equivilent more like our L8's.

1. Vastly improved 105mm HE round - better fragment pattern for a start.

2. 105mm bomblet round - fcuk all the arguments about cost vs payload and throw weight - arrse!

3. Vastly improved 155mm and 105mm illum rounds - let's push the candle-power envelope.

4. 155mm and 105mm WP technology demonstrator round - just for the awesome show it would make at the demo.

5. Fusing HE Frag with 'window' style wide-band jamming capability. Nice, cheap and totally non-residual.

6. And finally - bring back the Golden Bullet!! :D

Ok, maybe not the last one...

Watch the management at said company, especially a man whose name implies strength in the arm...they sometimes get confused and then they stab each other in the chest. Just remember that a pat on the back at RO is usually a recce for a dagger...At HQ in Farnborough it is even worse!!

Good luck in your new job, be nice to anyone from ARMTECH and it should all be apples...
