RIbble Steam Railway

Ribble Steam Railway – come together, learn and connect

Located just off the old Preston Docks

Can't commend it highly enough to you all.

It's not very big (2 sheds: museum and loco workshop); the trains don't go very far or very fast but the people love what they do and they're really quite lovely. Plus the canteen lady was cute -- rather.

Entry is only £7.00 for an adult and that includes as many rides on the puff-puff as you like in a day!

A cracking selection of photographs reflecting what was obviously a very enjoyable day .... have been on the Pickering to Whitby steam train a couple of times with Mrs B_R and there again the staff really seemed to enjoy and take a pride in their work .

I bet the engine shed smells wonderful! I always think of saddle tank engines as the fat, ginger girls of the railways. Not much to look at but reliable and always willing, plus you have a smile when you get off!

The rails that go across Strand road I helped to lay when I worked for BR.

Old-Salt
RIAT on Sunday: The US Viper Display Team F-16 took off to do a display but part way through the display the pilot reported a vibration and cancelled the rest of display.

I took this while they did a slow fly past for the tower to look at what might be causing it. This damage wasn't on the earlier photographs so happened during the display.

Wot, no canteen lady?

This isn’t any old yew tree, it’s The Irish Yew in Fermanagh, the mother of all Irish yews.

“The tree is female and can only be propagated from cuttings, but so many cuttings have been taken from the mother tree over the years that it has lost much of its upright shape. Despite this, we know that the tree’s modern appearance is still similar to visitors’ accounts of over 100 years ago, and it can still be visited and enjoyed today. Many young descendants of the mother tree also grow in the Pleasure Grounds at Florence Court.

The special yew at Florence Court has travelled many thousands of miles, as it is believed that almost all the Irish Yew specimens common in churchyards throughout the world come from this one tree.”
